Tom Wilson delivered one of the biggest hits of his playoffs career Monday during Game Two against the Boston Bruins.
The Capitals forward caught an unaware Curtis Lazar in the right shoulder sending him airborne into the Bruins bench.

Much of the talk heading into the trade deadline was that Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan was interested in upgrading his goaltending depth ahead of the postseason. But in the 24 hours ahead of the 3 PM buzzer, the Capitals have been linked with several intriguing forwards.
Sunday, TSN’s Frank Seravalli reported that the Capitals were among several teams trying to land Nick Foligno from the Columbus Blue Jackets for a first-round pick. Later that night, the Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta reported that the Capitals also tried to acquire the biggest star of this year’s deadline, 2018 MVP Taylor Hall.

Tom Wilson has a reputation for hitting hard, and not always cleanly. Late in Wednesday’s game against the Senators, Wilson checked Ottawa forward Curtis Lazar. The hit looked vicious, with Lazar’s head whipping sideways as he fell to the ice. Wilson was given a 10 minute misconduct and a match penalty for intent to injure. The latter would have resulted in an automatic one-game suspension. Wilson insisted after the game that he made a legal hip check to remove a player from the puck, which is clear when looking at the slow motion replay of the hit.
“I understand that I’m kind of under the microscope,” Wilson said yesterday according to Katie Brown of NHL.com. “The game as a whole is under the microscope right now.”
In this case, the microscope worked in Wilson’s favor. According to the CSN’s Chuck Gormley, Wilson’s 1o minute misconduct and match penalty will be scrubbed by the NHL, allowing the 21-year-old bruiser to play Friday night at Verizon Center. The Capitals were expecting the league to make this move.

“I wasn’t even trying to hit him,” Tom Wilson told the press after Wednesday’s 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators. Wilson had to watch the end of that game from the locker room, expelled from the ice following a big hit on Curtis Lazar.
What you think of the hit and the penalty depends on what you think of Tom Wilson in general. This much is clear: Wilson has a bad reputation in the league.
