What the Caps lineup may look like with players lost to to COVID protocols

As you are most likely very well aware, the NHL has fined the Washington Capitals $100,000 for player violations of the league’s COVID‑19 Protocols. We then got the news minutes later that more specifically, the Caps Russian quartet of Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, and Ilya Samsonov is now unavailable due to these supposed violations.

So, what’s next for the Caps lineup and what options do they have if these guys have to miss a game(s).

Caps, Alex Ovechkin release statements about COVID protocol violation

Earlier on Wednesday, the Capitals were assessed a large fine (to me at least, maybe not to Ted) for violating the NHL’s COVID protocols.

Then we learned that Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, and Ilya Samsonov are unavailable due to the COVID protocols.

Now the Caps and Ovechkin have released statements that should clear everything up.

NHL announces Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Alex Ovechkin, and Ilya Samsonov unavailable due to COVID protocols

The other shoe has dropped. The NHL has released the Washington Capitals’ unavailabilities due to COVID protocols.

The list is the Caps Russians: forwards Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alex Ovechkin, defender, Dmitry Orlov, and goalie Ilya Samsonov.

Earlier today, the Caps were fined $100,000 for violating COVID protocols.

NHL fines Capitals $100,000 for breaking COVID rules, player absences may follow

The Washington Capitals have the distinction of being the first team in the NHL to get fined for breaking COVID protocol.

We don’t know the specifics yet; we just the know the cost: $100,000.

Update: Ovechkin, Orlov, Samsonov, and Kuznetsov are unavailable due to the NHL’s COVID protocol.

Second update, 8:10 PM: The Capitals and Alex Ovechkin have released statements.

NHL releases key dates, protocols, and rule change for 2020-21 season

The 2020-21 season is full-speed ahead.

The NHL and the NHLPA jointly announced a bunch of protocols for how it’s going to handle COVID-19, positive tests, and travel next season as well as key dates (think: Trade Deadline and Expansion Draft) and a new rule change involving offside that should make it less complicated.
