Washington Capitals center Nic Dowd missed practice Friday due to an “illness” and now we know it’s COVID-19 related.
The team officially announced Friday afternoon that Dowd has been placed in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol.

The Washington Capitals got Lars Eller back for Sunday’s Carolina Hurricanes game after the Danish center spent 10 days quarantining and battling symptoms of the disease in a California hotel room. No other Capitals player tested positive during that time and Eller was unsure when he contracted the virus exactly.
Now the Capitals will have to remain extra vigilant as the Carolina Hurricanes announced that after their game against Washington that Tony DeAngelo and Brett Pesce have entered COVID protocol themselves.

Washington Capitals center Lars Eller tested positive for COVID-19 while the team was on their West Coast road trip in mid-November. The virus left Eller stranded in Anaheim, California, for over a week as he had to quarantine in a hotel room before being able to return to DC.
The fully vaccinated Eller made the most of his time by getting in some workouts, reading Mark Messier’s book, and binging movies and TV shows.

Washington Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette announced that Ilya Samsonov will get the start in net against the Los Angeles Kings, Wednesday, as the team plays its second game in two nights in California.
Tuesday, Vitek Vanecek took the L in the Capitals’ 3-2 overtime defeat to the Anaheim Ducks.

Lars Eller was not on the ice for today’s morning skate before the Washington Capitals take on the Anaheim Ducks and now we know why.
Eller is unavailable for tonight’s game due to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol. It is not known yet if this will force Eller out of more games after tonight. All we know as of this moment is that he isn’t playing against the Ducks.

The Washington Capitals were without four key players for their season finale against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. TJ Oshie and John Carlson missed the game due to lower-body injuries. Meanwhile, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Ilya Samsonov weren’t at the arena for other reasons.
Last week, Kuznetsov and Samsonov were suspended by the Capitals due to being late to some type of team function. The next day, Evgeny Kuznetsov landed on the COVID-19 Unavailability List while Samsonov was buried on the Capitals taxi squad, where it does not have to be reported if he’s in protocol or not.
On May 7, however, Capitals’ head coach Peter Laviolette let the cat out of the bag. “They’re both on [it],” he said.
Tuesday, Kuznetsov remained in protocol for the ninth straight day. It’s fair to assume Samsonov joined him on the list too. The NHL publishes updates around 5 PM every day.

A day after being suspended by the Capitals for discplinary reasons, Evgeny Kuznetsov has landed on the NHL’s COVID-19 Unavailability List for the second time this season.

When the Capitals practice on Wednesday, Jakub Vrana will be back with the team.
The NHL announced Tuesday afternoon that Vrana was removed from the league’s COVID-19 Unavailability List. Meanwhile, Justin Braun and Claude Giroux of the Flyers were sent into protocol. Their COVID-related issues were what forced the postponement of Tuesday’s Flyers-Capitals game.
Meanwhile, Vrana will be eligible to play when the Capitals take on the Penguins on Sunday.

The NHL announced Sunday afternoon that things got a little hairy before the Capitals and Flyers nationally-televised game was played at noon today.
This morning, a Flyers player entered COVID Protocol, presumably Travis Sanheim (he was added to the list this evening). The NHL says that all Flyers players, coaches, and staff were then required to take POC tests in advance of the game. After everyone passed, the league decided to play the game and not reschedule.

Well, this is not optimal. The Capitals have lost another star player for the time being.
Jakub Vrana was added to the NHL’s COVID-19 Unavailability list on Saturday. It’s unclear how long Jake will be out, but it could be a while. Players can be placed on the list for testing positive, showing symptoms, or having close contact with someone else who has the disease.
Vrana missed practice earlier in the day, which the Capitals termed a maintenance day.
