The Edmonton Oilers announced Monday night that Connor McDavid has tested positive for COVID-19. According to the team, McDavid underwent medical testing earlier in the day that revealed the positive test. He is experiencing mild symtomps currently.
The Oilers added that McDavid is self-quarantining at his home and will follow all safety protocols.
George Floyd died on May 25, after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes. His death has sparked sorrow and protests across the country, demanding meaningful change. While many high-profile athletes have shared their opinions on the event, including LeBron James and Colin Kaepernick, the NHL has been relatively quiet.
Two Black players, JT Brown and Evander Kane, were the first to speak up. In an interview with ESPN’s First Take, Kane called on other high profile athletes “like Tom Brady and Sidney Crosby” to do something.
“We need so many more athletes–that don’t look like me–speaking out about this,” he said, “having the same amount of outrage that I have inside, and using that to voice their opinion, to voice their frustration, because that’s the only way it’s going to change.”

Connor McDavid showed off a pair of hand-painted skates that he received as a gift from hockey equipment manufacturer CCM, Friday. The skates were painted by an artist from Quebec.
The Edmonton Oilers’ superstar opted not to wear the skates at the All-Star Skills Competition as he tried to defend his title in the Fastest Skater Event.
“Thanks for the #NHLAllStar gift @CCMHockey!” McDavid wrote on Instagram. “Going to keep these pieces of art for myself. Ready to go #ALLOUT with my usual set of CCM wheels!”
On April 6th, 2019, during the final regular-season game of the Edmonton Oilers’ 2018-19 schedule, Connor McDavid went crashing into the Calgary Flames net and suffered a terrifying and potentially career-ending injury.
It was later revealed that McDavid’s injury was a Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) tear in his left knee, something that came with a recommendation for surgery and carried a 10-month rehabilitation and recovery. McDavid opted for an advanced non-surgical rehabilitation program with the aim to return for the first game of the Oilers’ 2019-20 regular reason, just six months away.
Sportsnet had full access to McDavid and his rehab entire team throughout the off-season and documented it in a new feature called “Whatever It Takes,” which is slated to debut following the NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Friday, January 24th.

Alex Ovechkin has been voted into the 2020 All-Star Game and will be the Metropolitan Division All-Star’s captain. This year’s All-Star Weekend will be held in St. Louis.

Connor McDavid is really, really good at hockey. And even though the team he was playing against started their back-up back-up goalie, and pulled him to put in the back-up back-up back-up goalie, a six-point night in the modern era of the NHL is a truly remarkable feat.
McDavid had a point on all six of the Oilers’ goals, with three goals and three assists. Former Capital Andre Burakovsky incredibly scored the Avalanche’s only two goals of the night.

On Monday afternoon, the New Jersey Devils announced that they acquired Nikita Gusev from the Vegas Golden Knights. While this is a huge deal and yes the New Jersey Devils are looking a little scary, the bigger announcement came when the Devils tweeted Gusev will be wearing jersey number 97.
Why is this jersey number such a big deal? According to local Edmonton producer and DJ, Dean V., it’s actually disrespectful to Connor McDavid. Vince points out that nobody wore number 66 when Mario Lemieux play and nobody wore number 99 when Wayne Gretzky played.
Connor McDavid, according to Dean, is on that level.

No, seriously. Stop chirping Connor McDavid about his fashion choices. Yes, he wore a suit to the NHL Awards and looked like he used a skate lace as a belt and tied it with a big floppy bow. And yes, his skinny tie looks like it may, in fact, be a belt. It quickly went viral on Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit.
Maybe McDavid is trolling all of us with his tied-belt and belt-tie. Maybe he’s just having fun with his fashion. Either way: that’s okay.
