Caps raffle to support Parkinson’s research

Hello, RMNB family.

About five years ago, my mom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Since that time, my family, led by my Mom, has held a number of fundraisers for Team Fox, the fundraising program at the Michael J. Fox foundation.

This year, one of the fundraisers we are doing is a Caps raffle. The proceeds from the Caps raffle will go to support my cousin Colleen who is running in the NYC marathon in support of Team Fox. All of the money donated to Colleen’s fundraiser will go to Team Fox.

The 7th Annual Leap Towards a Cure Tournament: Hockey For A Great Cause

For the 7th year, the Gardens Ice House in Laurel is hosting the Leap Towards a Cure hockey tournament from August 3-7, raising money for cancer research, treatment, and education at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD.

The tournament is operated by the Andrea Henderson Memorial Fund, a volunteer-only 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization. Every penny of the proceeds from the tournament will support cancer research at the Kimmel Center. Since the tourney’s beginnings, Leap Towards A Cure has raised over $100,000 and counting for the Kimmel Center.

Still Giving: Alex Ovechkin Donates 70 Bags of Hockey Equipment to Orphanage in Moscow Region

Apparently giving away a car, fulfilling the wish of an 8-year-old with diabetes, going out on a sushi date with a 10-year-old with Down’s Syndrome, giving away countless sticks and pucks, and secretly supporting a bunch of Russian orphanages is not enough.

According to a press release from the Moscow Region’s ministry of physical culture, sports, and youth programs, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has donated 70 bags of hockey equipment to the Sergiev Posad boarding school, an orphanage operated by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Caps captain Alex Ovechkin has never shied away from charitable work. From participating in the Caps’ Make-A-Wish efforts to playing in charity preseason games annually in Russia, Ovi never misses an opportunity to help those less fortunate. Plus, we can’t forget his date with Ann earlier this season. But some of his secretive charity efforts behind the scenes are just now becoming public.

Pavel Lysenkov of Sovetsky Sport has revealed that Alex Ovechkin has quietly been supporting as many as seven orphanages in different regions of Russia.

Caps Wear Purple Jerseys During Warm-Ups, Raise $55,000 For Charity

Wednesday, the Washington Capitals hosted Hockey Fights Cancer night at Verizon Center. They had 11-year-old blood cancer survivor Ryan Darby participate in the ceremonial faceoff (which was adorable). They also wore purple-colored warm-up jerseys with lavender highlights, colors that represent all forms of cancer.

During the game, the Caps auctioned the signed jerseys off (which were signed with a purple sharpie) and Chris Gordon reports they raised over $55,000 for charity.

Nicklas Backstrom Plays Hockey in Hospital Hallway With Sick Child, Raises Money for Gävle Clinic

While in his homeland of Sweden, Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom does a lot for the community. Earlier this summer, Backstrom presented his scholarship for the fifth time to two talented 16-year-old student athletes.

On Sunday, as first reported by Malin Andersson of Hockey Ramblings, Nicky amped up the cuteness to 11 while visiting a hospital in Gävle to participate in the clinic’s Play Therapy program.

The program inspires sick children before they undergo needed medical treatments. And they do it by– you guessed it– playing!

Caps Wear Green to Honor St. Patrick’s Day

For the second time in ten days, the Washington Capitals took the ice for pre-game warm-ups in some unusual duds. The occasion for Sunday’s sweaters? St. Patrick’s Day. However, the holiday isn’t until March 17, falling three full days after the Caps wore these uni’s. On top of that, Washington, D.C. isn’t exactly known for its Irish heritage. Nevertheless, the jersey were auctioned off during the game with a portion of the funds going to charity. Caps-related Auction Tomorrow to Help a Local Infant Beat Cancer

Aiden Lipscomb is a 7-month-old baby boy with a rare form of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of muscle cancer. Aiden is on a 54-week chemotherapy regimen, which will be followed by radiation and further treatment. As you can imagine, the medical costs are astronomical. To help Aiden’s family afford to continue his treatment, an auction will be held tomorrow afternoon.

The silent auction will have a lot of items of interest to Caps fans. There will also be a children’s book fair, jewelry, concessions, and delicious cupcakes. There is a $5 entry fee, all of which will go directly to Aiden’s Recovery Fund.
