Alex Ovechkin scores 803rd career goal on breakaway against Senators, trails Wayne Gretzky by 91

The Washington Capitals had one of their worst periods in recent memory against the Ottawa Senators in the first. The Senators recorded 16 of the game’s first 20 shots. The Capitals were sloppy and struggled to generate any offense.

Not in the second period.

Alex Ovechkin scored on a breakaway during his first shift of the period to wake up his sleepy teammates. The goal was the 803rd of his career.

All the NHL trades and news during the second day of the Draft

The second day of the NHL Draft was just as busy as day one in terms of trades and news.

For Capitals fans, Vitek Vanecek’s trade to the New Jersey Devils for two draft picks was the headliner, but there were several other newsworthy moves that went down on the floor of Centre Bell.

Minnesota Wild will be without 9 players against Capitals including leading scorer Kirill Kaprizov

The Minnesota Wild announced Saturday afternoon that nine of their regular roster members would not play tonight against the Washington Capitals due to either injury or COVID. That list includes Kirill Kaprizov, Jonas Brodin, Joel Eriksson Ek, Alex Goligoski, Jordan Greenway, Nick Bjugstad, Brandon Duhaime, Jared Spurgeon, and Cam Talbot.

The Capitals and Wild are set to do battle at 8 PM in the Xcel Energy Center.

GOALIE FIGHT: Mike Smith fights Cam Talbot during Oilers and Flames line brawl

The Battle of Alberta descended into chaos again during Hockey Night In Canada.

Late in the second period with Edmonton holding a commanding 6-3 lead, Oilers forward Sam Gagner went for a diving poke check while Flames goaltender Cam Talbot covered the puck. Calgary, down big, did not like this very much. So Talbot started punching everything that moved and HERE WE GO!

Cam Talbot spends the day skating with Ontario Make-A-Wish kid

One of the most heart-warming moments in hockey is when NHL players partner with Make-a-Wish to make kids dreams come true. Yesterday, the Edmonton Oilers did something that one little fan will never forget.

Gage Foster, a Make-a-Wish kid from Ontario, had one wish: to skate with his favorite goalie, Cam Talbot. Talbot and the Oilers weren’t letting distance get in the way, and flew Gage to Edmonton to make his wish come true.

Late in the second period, Oilers’ goaltender Cam Talbot did his best Tim Thomas impersonation, punching TJ Oshie in the head several times after the Caps winger crashed the crease.

Though Familiar Foes, the Capitals and Rangers Will Face Off as New Teams

So, it’s the Rangers again. For the fifth time in seven seasons, the Washington Capitals will square off against the folks from Madison Square Garden in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. These series have produced signature moments in Capitals history, such as Sergei Fedorov‘s game seven winner in 2009, and crushing defeats, like when the Rangers outlasted the Capitals by just one goal in game seven of the second round in 2012, booking a spot in the Eastern Conference Final. But, as is their pattern this year, the Washington Capitals will tell you this team is different. They don’t pay attention to the past.

“All that old stuff, get rid of it,” head coach Barry Trotz, in his first year with the Capitals, said. “Let’s look to a new era. Let’s build something.”

Phillip Grubauer to Make 6th Start in 9 Games

For the seventh time in nine games, Philipp Grubauer will be in net for the Washington Capitals, his sixth start during that span. That means Braden Holtby, the Caps’ savior for the first two months of the season, will be watching from the bench once again. Michal Neuvirth continues to remain in limbo.

“He’s only played a couple games but I feel comfortable with him right now,” head coach Adam Oates said of Grubauer after the morning skate.
