Nicklas Backstrom skates in Brynas’s annual ‘Black and White’ game as he prepares for pivotal Capitals training camp

Nicklas Backstrom was back out on the ice on Saturday as he continues preparation for his 17th season in the National Hockey League. The Washington Capitals great was not clad in his usual red, white, and blue though as he donned black for Team Masken during Brynäs IF’s annual “Black and White” game.

Backstrom, a Gavle native and former Brynäs player, was a regular participant in the game before the pandemic and his hip resurfacing surgery threw a wrench in his usual yearly plans. The 35-year-old center has a very important training camp coming up for the Caps as he looks to prove that he’s still capable of being a positive contributor in the NHL over a year removed from that surgery.

Nicklas Backstrom shows off sword-sheathing celly during Brynas’s annual ‘Black And White’ game

Nicklas Backstrom took part in the ‘Black and White’ annual game on Thursday with his former club Brynas IF. He and Capitals teammate Christian Djoos put up a valiant effort for Team Black, who lost by a score of 7-5. Backstrom certainly did his part, scoring on a penalty shot which tied up the game at 4-4.

After scoring, he celebrated like we’ve never seen him celebrate before.

Nicklas Backstrom announces Brynas’s ‘Black And White’ game which this year will include women players

Wednesday, Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom announced that Brynas’s annual ‘Black And White Game’ will be held on August 15th.

The sunburned Brynas alum also included some special news along with the date.

Nicklas Backstrom plays in Brynäs’ Black and White scrimmage, speaks about NHL’s ‘sad’ Olympic decision

Thursday, Capitals first-line center Nicklas Backstrom suited up in a game for the first time since Team Sweden won gold at the 2017 World Championship. Along with fellow Brynäs alum, Caps defense prospect Christian Djoos, Backstrom played in the team’s annual Black and White scrimmage. Backstrom played parts of three seasons with his hometown SEL team before starting his career with the Capitals.

Days before the scrimmage however, Backstrom made news during an interview with national outlet Aftonbladet. The discussion focused primarily on the NHL’s unpopular decision to forbid its players to play in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Nicklas Backstrom and Christian Djoos to play in Brynäs’ annual internal scrimmage

In early August, Nicklas Backstrom will play in his first game since winning a gold medal at the 2017 World Championship. The Capitals first-line center will participate in Brynäs’ annual internal scrimmage. Capitals prospect defenseman Christian Djoos will play as well.

Both players are alumni of the team.

At the age of 15, Backstrom first started playing for Brynäs IF’s junior team in the J20 SuperElit league. According to Wikipedia, Backstrom was promoted to the pro team in the Elitserien, Sweden’s top professional hockey league, during the 2004-05 season after scoring 34 points in 29 games (17 goals and 17 assists) as a 17-year-old. Backstrom would play parts of three seasons with the big league team before becoming a full-time member of the Washington Capitals during the 2007-08 season.

The game will be played at 6:30pm in the Gavlerinken Arena. Other notable NHL players who are planning to participate include Mattias Ekholm and Jakob Silfverberg.

Caps Prospect Christian Djoos Scores First Point as a Professional

Caps seventh-round pick and potential second-generation NHLer Christian Djoos has done it all for Brynas IF in the Swedish Elitserien. He has taken on many roles– from first-pair alongside NHLer Cody Franson, to healthy scratch, to limited seventh D-man duties. He’s played in 31 games this year, averaging 13:49 of TOI after just one outing with only 04:53 TOI last year. But he’s never scored a point in the Elitserien.
