The Washington Capitals were dramatically outshot and out-attempted in a sleepy game against the Detroit Red Wings Thursday night. But in the end, they had the two players who were the difference makers.
Philipp Grubauer made 39 saves to notch his third shutout of the season. Brett Connolly also tallied his 15th goal of the 2017-18 campaign, giving the Capitals a 1-0 victory.
Connolly scored the game winner on a 2-on-0 break with Jakub Vrana.
Sunday afternoon, Capitals forward Brett Connolly scored his 14th goal of the season, one shy of his career high set last year.
The goal was the first of three tallies that helped fuel an unlikely Capitals’ third-period comeback, which forced overtime. The Caps would ultimately fall in the extra session to the Detroit Red Wings 5-4.

Connolly’s 12 goals in 37 games also puts him on pace to set a new career high in tallies (15) which he set last year after 66 games.
Dolphin-loving teammates Andre Burakovsky, Jakub Vrana, and Devante Smith-Pelly may have vacationed together in the Bahamas, but they weren’t the only group of Caps players who spent the bye week together.
Brett Connolly, Taylor Chorney, Braden Holtby, and Tom Wilson all traveled to Punta Cana. The beach destination is located in the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Beags goal was the latest go-ahead goal in Capitals history (59:58), eclipsing the mark set by Alexander Semin on Nov. 6, 2008 (a 3-2 win vs. CAR – 59:49).
Beagle’s teammates were so excited about the pre-bye week W that they almost injured Brett Connolly.
Despite being scratched and missing games due to injury, Brett Connolly is about to reach the double digit mark in goals for the second straight season.
Connolly scored late in the first period to give the Caps a 1-0 lead.
On Thursday evening, the Capitals put on their best suits and ties for the team’s annual Caps Casino Night. All proceeds from the event, hosted in the casino ballroom of the newly opened MGM National Harbor, benefited the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation.
Players interacted with fans while playing blackjack, craps, roulette, Texas Hold ’Em, and slot machines.
