Tampa Bay goalie Curtis McElhinney collaborated with teammate Mathieu Joseph to create the ultimate tribute mask honoring Black athletes who trailbazed a path for others.
Montreal-baed goalie-mask painter, David Leroux, debuted McElhinney’s new Black Lives Matter mask on Jackie Robinson Day and the 57th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s I Have A Dream speech.
On Saturday afternoon, Minnesota Wild defenseman Matt Dumba became the first NHL player to kneel during the American national anthem.
Before the anthem, Dumba gave a powerful speech on systemic racism prior to the start of the Chicago Blackhawks-Edmonton Oilers game.

Braden Holtby and Brandi Holtby launched an auction on Monday morning entitled ‘Get Off the Bench for Racial Equality.’ The auction will raise money for Black Lives Matter DC and The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. The Holtbys will also donate $5,000 to each organization and match the funds raised through the auction.
The move comes after the Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender released a powerful note on Twitter last week denouncing racism and promising to help the Black Lives Matter movement in whatever way he can.
“Keep fighting, and I vow to demonstrate and educate what you are fighting for,” Holtby wrote. “Not only to myself but my children, family, and anyone else who will listen. Because America will never be great until all BLACK lives matter.”
