Washington Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette has put together a brand new first line at this year’s Training Camp as the battle-tested duo of Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov is now joined by Anthony Mantha on the right wing.
The three forwards did not skate together at all as a unit last season at five-on-five.

When Brian MacLellan sent Jakub Vrana, Richard Panik (salary dump), and first- and second-round picks to the Detroit Red Wings for forward Anthony Mantha at the trade deadline, the Capitals general manager explained that he made the deal because the young Czech forward was “frustrated” under new head coach Peter Laviolette. There was also another reason.
“He has arbitration rights,” MacLellan said in April. “He’s got some good numbers. Projecting that salary, we get some cost certainty with Mantha. We know what that contract is.”
Fast forward four months later, Vrana, a restricted free agent, just signed a new multi-year deal with the Red Wings. Vrana’s cap hit is worth less than Mantha’s. Meanwhile, the Capitals might need to make a minor trade before the season to have a full 23-man Opening Night roster.

Anthony Mantha underwent some big life changes during the hockey year and it’s continuing during the offseason.
Thursday, Anthony got engaged to girlfriend Caitlyn Duffy.
The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced on Saturday morning that Caps forward Anthony Mantha has been fined $5,000 for goalie interference.
Also, The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell reports that Dmitry Orlov will not face any supplemental discipline for his high hit on Kevan Miller.

Rangers forward Pavel Buchnevich will have a hearing on Thursday after jumping to deliver a cross-check to Anthony Mantha’s face Wednesday night. It is not known if the hearing will be in-person on over the phone.
Buchnevich’s run-in with Mantha occurred in the second period, resulting in Buchnevich’s ejection. TJ Oshie scored his second of the night on the ensuing power play.

Wednesday, during The Second Line Brawl Game, Buchnevich had a run-in with Anthony Mantha that ended in blood and him ejected from the ballgame.

Monday, the newest Capital was reunited with his F2 mini Goldendoodle, Millie Mantha, in his temporary apartment in Arlington, VA.

Capitals fans had every reason initially to not like the Anthony Mantha trade. In the deal, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan sent popular, 2018 Stanley Cup champion forward Jakub Vrana to the Red Wings along with two high draft picks. MacLellan reasoned that Vrana seemed unhappy and with his restricted free agency pending, the Capitals wanted cost certainty. The team also thought Mantha’s game could evolve in Washington.
“[Mantha] is the main guy and there’s probably a little pressure on him to produce,” MacLellan said after the deal was announced. “I think he comes here and he’s just got to fit in. He’s going to have a veteran group of players. I think he’s going to learn from those veterans. I think we have a good leadership group of older guys that have been around. We have a lot of guys that have won a Cup. So I think it’s up to him to fit in, play well, relax and compete and I think everything will work out.”
Indeed, it has so far. Mantha became the first Capitals player of all time to score in his first four games with the team. If you count his final game with Detroit, Mantha is riding a five-game goal streak.
