TJ Oshie and Justin Schultz return for practice, Anthony Mantha wears non-contact jersey

The Washington Capitals have not been playing good hockey lately. The Caps have won only 8 of their 19 games in 2022 so far and have been outplayed over the last two weeks by some of the NHL’s worst teams: the Canadiens, Senators, Blue Jackets, and Flyers.

But reinforcements appear to be coming. After receiving three days off from Peter Laviolette over the weekend, the Capitals returned to practice on Monday and several core players skated again after being out due to injury.

TJ Oshie, Justin Schultz, and Vitek Vanecek participated in practice per the Washington Post’s Samantha Pell. Meanwhile, Anthony Mantha skated and wore a non-contact jersey.

Anthony Mantha takes the ice before Capitals practice for first time since November

After Peter Laviolette said early Wednesday morning that the Caps “hope to see him this month out on the ice”, injured forward Anthony Mantha was skating hours later at MedStar Capitals Iceplex.

Mantha has been sidelined since having shoulder surgery in early November.

Peter Laviolette gives update on Anthony Mantha’s injury status: ‘I think we hope to see him this month out on the ice’

Capitals winger Anthony Mantha has been out of action since suffering a shoulder injury against the Florida Panthers on November 4. The scoring winger had surgery the day after and was subsequently placed on long-term injured reserve in December.

Caps head coach Peter Laviolette has been a bit cagey when answering questions about Mantha’s status until early Wednesday morning during his radio spot with The Sports Junkies. Laviolette gave the most in-depth answer on Mantha we’ve had since the injury.

Nicklas Backstrom officially activated from injured non-roster list, Anthony Mantha placed on LTIR

Washington Capitals legend and star center Nicklas Backstrom is finally off the shelf.

The team announced Wednesday afternoon that Backstrom has been removed from the injured non-roster list in the expectation that he will make his season debut tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Report: TJ Oshie and Nic Dowd will join Capitals on West Coast road trip while Nicklas Backstrom remains out

The Washington Capitals could get two core players back during their four-game, West Coast road trip that will see them visit Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose, and Seattle.

The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir reported on Monday morning that TJ Oshie and Nic Dowd will fly with the team. El-Bashir also reports that Nicklas Backstrom and Anthony Mantha will stay home.

Anthony Mantha out indefinitely after having shoulder surgery

The Washington Capitals announced at 11:29 am that Anthony Mantha was placed on injured reserve and the team had recalled Aliaksei Protas from Hershey.

Sixty minutes later after the first tweet, the team revealed that Mantha had shoulder surgery and is out indefinitely.

Capitals place Anthony Mantha on injured reserve, recall Aliaksei Protas from Hershey

Aliaksei Protas has been brought back to the Capitals a day after being sent back to AHL Hershey.

The rookie was recalled back to the team after Anthony Mantha suffered an upper-body injury against the Florida Panthers.

Mantha was placed on injured reserve Friday morning.

Anthony Mantha leaves game against Panthers with upper-body injury

The Washington Capitals are already without Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie and now they may have lost another piece of their top-six forward group due to injury.

At the start of the third period against the Panthers, Anthony Mantha was not visible on the bench and was said to be being evaluated for an injury. He did not return for the third period and was announced to have an upper-body injury.

In Dennis Cholowski, the Capitals are getting a ‘great offensive-minded defenseman’ former teammates say

The Washington Capitals surprisingly claimed defenseman Dennis Cholowski off waivers from the expansion Seattle Kraken on Thursday.

Cholowski was the Kraken’s Expansion Draft selection from the Detroit Red Wings and at one time played with past and now current teammates, Anthony Mantha and Nick Jensen, in Detroit.

Mantha and Jensen spoke about the Capitals’ new addition at practice on Friday.

Lines: Tom Wilson replaces Anthony Mantha on top line, Connor McMichael and Hendrix Lapierre competing for third center spot

It only took one preseason game, but the Anthony Mantha experiment on the first line could already be over.

After reformulating the team’s two groups in the morning to an NHL squad and an AHL squad, Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette replaced Mantha on the right side with Tom Wilson. Mantha jumped down to the left side of the second line, skating with Lars Eller and Daniel Sprong.
