The Washington Capitals announced one Training Camp roster cut on Friday. Andrew Cristall, the team’s 2023 second-round draft selection, has been returned back to the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets.
Cristall made his NHL preseason debut on Thursday night against the Detroit Red Wings. The talented forward earned an assist on Rasmus Sandin’s power-play goal.

The Washington Capitals looked a lot smoother in their second game of the preseason.
Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery gave jerseys to the team’s superstar core including Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Tom Wilson, TJ Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and John Carlson. That firepower, along with successful NHL preseason debuts from Ivan Miroshnichenko and Andrew Cristall, was enough to give the Capitals’ 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.
John Carlson scored the game-winner, Tom Wilson potted a goal, and Nicklas Backstrom reversed roles with Alex Ovechkin to add a tally of his own. Rasmus Sandin added an insurance goal in the third period.
Andrew Cristall is having the most pure reaction to making his NHL preseason debut for the Capitals’ Thursday night. The 18-year-old left wing is spazzing out in the most adorable ways.
According to the Capitals, the team’s second-round pick from the 2023 NHL Draft left his shoes in his car, apparently forcing him to re-make his walk down to the Capital One Arena locker room for the first time.
Cristall could be seen laughing and smiling in photos posted by the Caps as Alex Ovechkin, wearing his Michael Jordan hoodie, can be seen in the foreground.

Annapolis, MD — The Washington Capitals held their final day of Rookie Camp at McMullen Hockey Arena on Tuesday.
Top prospects like Ivan Miroshnichenko, Hendrix Lapierre, Vincent Iorio, Alexander Suzdalev, and Andrew Cristall participated in the four-day event, which saw the young stars not only work on their on-ice skills, but team-build off of it at the US Naval Academy.

Andrew Cristall was graded as a first-round talent by many scouts before the 2023 NHL Draft, but major concerns about his skating ability saw the high-scoring forward to drop all the way to the Washington Capitals at pick number 40.
The British Columbia native recorded an astounding 95 points (39g, 56a) in just 54 games for the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets last season but questions remained about his straight-line speed.
Cristall says he’s already seen rapid improvement in his skating ability after a summer of hard work and others are noticing, too.

The Washington Commanders had an ownership change over the offseason, finally cutting ties with longtime problematic figurehead Dan Snyder. With new owners Josh Harris, Magic Johnson, and Mark Ein at the helm, the Commanders had an excitement and buzz at FedEx Field for the team’s home opener against the Arizona Cardinals that had long been missing over the last decade-plus.
That energy and optimism was felt early by the sold-out crowd with how deafening it was. It also showed in the sports celebrities that attended the game.
The Washington Capitals were well represented at the football team’s season opener in Landover, MD. Caps captain Alex Ovechkin and his family were in the house along and the team’s Russian prospects — Alex Alexeyev and Ivan Miroshnichenko. The American football game appears to be the first for Miroshnichenko.

ARLINGTON, VA– 2023 first overall pick Connor Bedard spent Tuesday at the Capitals’ practice facility as a participant in the NHLPA Rookie Showcase. Though he’ll be playing nearly 600 miles away in Chicago, Bedard has ties to DC through friends Alexander Suzdalev and Andrew Cristall.
Suzdalev shared a line with Bedard for much of the 2022-23 season with the Regina Pats, while Cristall and Bedard met as children while playing in Vancouver and now play in a roller-hockey league together.
Both players earned a shout-out during Bedard’s press conference Tuesday, where the Blackhawk-to-be highlighted the skills he’s gotten to see up close.

The Washington Capitals are returning to Maryland.
Tuesday, the Caps announced that they will split their Rookie Camp between MedStar Capitals Iceplex and McMullen Hockey Arena in Annapolis, MD.
Prospects schedule to attend include 2020 first-round pick Hendrix Lapierre, 2022 first-round pick Ivan Miroshnichenko, Vincent Iorio, Alexander Suzdalev, and Andrew Cristall.
The Washington Capitals announced on Thursday that they have signed 2023 second-round draft selection Andrew Cristall to a three-year, entry-level contract.
Cristall is the first member of the team’s 2023 draft class to sign a contract. His deal, signed just a day after development camp ended, will see him paid $810,000 in the NHL and $82,500 in the AHL.

ARLINGTON, VA – Andrew Cristall, the Capitals’ second round pick in the 2023 draft, has had quite the week. Selected 40th overall, Cristall left for Washington the following day to participate in the Capitals’ annual development camp, where he’s had the chance to learn alongside plenty of the team’s young prospects.
Though it’s been a milestone week for his career, the draft and development camp have put a hamper on Cristall’s usual summer plans: roller hockey.
He’s spent the last two summers playing for the Great Guys of the North Shore Inline Hockey League, but skipped a game to attend the draft and will miss another while in D.C.
Also on that team is first-overall sensation Connor Bedard.
