Report: Anders Lee will not receive supplemental discipline for Nicklas Backstrom hit

The Washington Capitals were furious with Anders Lee’s blindside hit that injured Nicklas Backstrom after Game One, Wednesday.

John Carlson called the unsuspecting hit “real dirty”, TJ Oshie described it as “extremely late” and “cheap”, and Todd Reirden said it was “predatory.”

Despite the Capitals’ protestations, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety will not be disciplining Anders Lee. The Athletic’s Arthur Staple reported the news on Twitter.

Capitals call Anders Lee’s hit on Nicklas Backstrom late and predatory: ‘It looked real dirty’

John Carlson, TJ Oshie, and head coach Todd Reirden were critical of Anders Lee’s blindside hit on Nicklas Backstrom after the Capitals’ 4-2 loss to the New York Islanders, Wednesday.

Carlson, who tried to fight Lee immediately after he delivered the bodycheck, said, “It looked real dirty to me.”

Tom Wilson brutally beats up Anders Lee in fight

Anders Lee’s dust-up with John Carlson was apparently just his warmup bout.

Late in the first period, Tom Wilson challenged Lee to drop his gloves after the Islanders nailed Nicklas Backstrom with a dirty hit to start the game.

Lee obliged and he probably shouldn’t have.

These NHL players have spoken out about racism and the death of George Floyd

George Floyd died on May 25, after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes. His death has sparked sorrow and protests across the country, demanding meaningful change. While many high-profile athletes have shared their opinions on the event, including LeBron James and Colin Kaepernick, the NHL has been relatively quiet.

Two Black players, JT Brown and Evander Kane, were the first to speak up. In an interview with ESPN’s First Take, Kane called on other high profile athletes “like Tom Brady and Sidney Crosby” to do something.

“We need so many more athletes–that don’t look like me–speaking out about this,” he said, “having the same amount of outrage that I have inside, and using that to voice their opinion, to voice their frustration, because that’s the only way it’s going to change.”

Since that time, more NHL players–both white and Black–have added their voices to the call for change. Here’s who they are and what they had to say.

If the NHL season restarts, Alex Ovechkin wants the playoffs to start right away. PK Subban would like a 31-team NCAA-esque tournament.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was one of four NHL players who participated in a Zoom teleconference on Thursday with the NHL season paused due to the coronavirus pandemic. The conversation was led by the NHL’s vice president of communications John Dellapina and the other players involved were the New Jersey Devils’ PK Subban, the New York Islanders’ Anders Lee, and the Columbus Blue Jackets’ Nick Foligno. Reporters submitted questions in the morning.

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the 2019-20 season is if the season will resume. Going on the assumption that it does, Dellapina asked Ovechkin if he’d want to play more regular-season games or just skip the final 13 games and begin the playoffs.

With the Capitals in first place in the Metropolitan Division, Ovi was fine just going right to the playoffs.

“Sorry, guys,” Ovi said laughing.

Scary moment: Casey Cizikas leaves game after arm gets sliced by skate blade

During a scary moment, Islanders center Casey Cizikas left the Caps-Isles game early in the first period.

While forechecking along the boards with Nicklas Backstrom, Cizikas fell over, but managed to keep possession of the puck while sliding on his belly. After sliding the biscuit away to the center of the ice, Cizikas was stepped on by Anders Lee as three players converged on the puck.

Casey Cizikas Spears Tom Wilson in the ‘Private Parts from Behind’ (GIF)

In game four, Caps winger Tom Wilson injured Islanders 38-year-old defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky with a clean hit behind the net. That threw gasoline on an already simmering fire — Kyle Okposo injured Eric Fehr the game before in another clean hit— and Visnovksy’s teammates came to his defense through a war of words in the media.

“He’s an idiot,” Islanders forward Kyle Okposo said. “That guy runs around, he hits reckless. He jumps, leaves his feet. There’s no place for that.”

“We could have easily hit a lot of guys like that too,” captain John Tavares said.

On Thursday night, the Islanders looked to serve some frontier justice to Wilson.

All This Happened, More or Less: Isles Beat Caps 3-2 (OT)

For years, the Islanders have made that quote ring true. Confused ownership, terrible hockey and of course Nassau Colosseum. The old place will soon be gone from our TV screens. The smell, the lighting, the architecture, the scoreboard stolen from the local high school. So it goes.

Now, though, the Islanders are moving on. Pretty soon they’ll playing their games in a decedent building in Brooklyn. They’re also now good at hockey. The Caps had trouble with that tonight.

The first period was mostly dominated by the Isles. Anders Lee put them up top after John Carlson failed to cling to his man. Washington then released a small furry of shots before Alex Ovechkin got the Caps back in it with another one of them goals from the circle place when his team has more people on the ice. Travis Hamonic then gave New York the lead again when his high flying wrist shot made it past an effectively blindfolded Braden Holtby.

The second was mostly Isles, but the Caps came on towards the end. The Isles took another unnecessary penalty and Ovi did The Thing. 2-2.

Isles pressed in the third but there was nothing doing.

In the extra, scrapeless frame, Nicky grabbed someone’s stick. John Tavares threw his hands in the air. That’s all. Isles beat Caps 3-2 (OT).
