Alex DeBrincat traded to Detroit Red Wings for two players and two draft picks

The offseason Alex DeBrincat saga has ended. The high-scoring winger is a Detroit Red Wings player after his move from the Ottawa Senators was finalized on Sunday night.

The Senators will be getting forward Dominik Kubalik, defenseman Donovan Sebrango, a conditional 2024 first-round draft pick, and a 2024 fourth-round draft pick in return. Debrincat will also be signing a medium-length extension with the Red Wings.

Hockey insider Elliotte Friedman was first to report the deal being done.

Dylan Strome suspiciously changes Instagram avatar to photo with Alex DeBrincat

Ottawa Senators forward Alex DeBrincat has received major headlines over the NHL offseason. The talented forward has refused to sign a long-term contract with the Sens and will be on the move for the second consecutive summer.

The Senators want to deal the former two-time, 40-goal scorer before the league starts its salary arbitration hearings from July 20 through August 4. If they don’t move him by then, DeBrincat’s value will plummet as he’ll be locked into a one-year deal and have no lengthy contract extension. That fact means rumors about the high-scoring winger have picked up in recent days.

Capitals center and former two-time teammate of DeBrincat, Dylan Strome, added his own fuel to those fires. He changed his Instagram profile photo to one of him and DeBrincat celebrating the OHL Championship they won together with the Erie Otters in 2017.

Capitals reportedly still ‘looking to make a hockey trade in their top six’

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman put a bow on the 2022-23 season with his final 32 Thoughts Podcast episode of the summer. In it, he and fellow insider Jeff Marek analyzed every team’s free agency moves and what they believe might be next for them.

Friedman echoed what Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said during his press conference over the weekend: the Capitals are still looking to make a deal to try and improve their top six.

He also gave some more background to his previous reporting that the Caps and Nashville Predators discussed a possible Evgeny Kuznetsov trade.

Elliotte Friedman mentions Capitals as potential trade suitor for Senators’ Alex DeBrincat

Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan reiterated his interest in securing a top-six forward this offseason at the draft in Nashville on Thursday. During that presser, he seemed to indicate that the team was already working on a trade for that top-six talent.

One name that would fit that billing is the Ottawa Senators’ Alex DeBrincat. In the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast that came out on Friday, hockey insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned the Caps as a potential landing spot for the scoring winger.

Alex DeBrincat has reportedly given Ottawa Senators a list of preferred destinations as team seeks trade partner

The chance that the Ottawa Senators and forward Alex DeBrincat go their separate ways this offseason looks like it’s increasing in certainty by the day. DeBrincat’s restricted free agent status and the sheer confusion surrounding the team’s ownership situation are the largest contributing factors.

The two sides seem like they’ll be heading in the direction of a mutually beneficial trade and that was buoyed by a Wednesday report from Pierre LeBrun during TSN’s Insider Trading.

LeBrun says DeBrincat has given the Sens a list of preferred destinations so that he will be more likely to sign an extension through the trade and maximize value going back to Ottawa.

City of Chicago not a fan of Alex DeBrincat trade

The Chicago Blackhawks traded two-time 40-goal-scorer Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators on Thursday. DeBrincat is going into the final year of his contract ($6.4 million AAV) and is owed a huge qualifying offer in 2023-24 ($9 million).

The rebuilding Blackhawks made the right move in dealing DeBrincat, but many fans are questioning the return. The Blackhawks did not receive any young stars or top prospects in the deal. They received three draft picks: the Senators’ first and second-round picks in tonight’s 2022 NHL Draft — the 7th and 39th overall picks — and a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.

That had some feeling a little down.
