Alex Ovechkin, Braden Holtby, and Barry Trotz will be representing the Washington Capitals at the 2018 NHL All-Star Game this weekend and NBC is now in full promotion mode.
Because the league’s annual celebration is being held in Tampa this year, the league is using a #HockeyHitsTheBeach theme to promote the three-on-three tournament.
Ovechkin and Holtby figured heavily in the promotion.
Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby was named to Metropolitan Division All-Star Team on Wednesday. This will be the third-straight All-Star Game for the former Vezina Trophy winner. Meanwhile, Caps defenseman John Carlson was snubbed from a potential first ASG appearance.
Holtby, who pretty much singlehandedly kept the Capitals at .500 during a difficult first 20 games of the season, has won 24 of 32 starts this year. As the Capitals have integrated several rookie defensemen into the lineup, Holtby has arguably been the team’s most valuable player, posting a 2.68 goals-against average and .917 save percentage in the first half of the season.
For the second time in four seasons coaching the Capitals, Barry Trotz will serve as a head coach during the All-Star Game.
Saturday after practice, Trotz spoke to the media about the nod and credited his players and staff.
Prior to the All-Star Game in Tampa on January 28, the NHL has opened voting for the division captain.
Each fan-voted captain will lead his division team in the three-on-three tournament. From the Capitals, you can vote for Nicklas Backstrom, Braden Holtby, Evgeny Kuznetsov, or Alex Ovechkin.
