Sizing up the Leafs: 5-on-5

It’s once again the most wonderful time of year, the NHL playoffs. The Caps open the second season on Thursday against the Leafs and are heavy favorites to advance to the second round.

The Caps went 2-1-0 vs the Leafs this season. The one loss came in Toronto back in November, when the Leafs won 4-2. But the Caps won the final two matchups of the season, a 6-5 OT win at home in January and a 4-1 victory in Toronto during the first week of April.

The Leafs are a young, fast, dynamic team that, while not the juggernaut the Caps have been this season, certainly shouldn’t be taken lightly. For today, we’re gonna take a look at how the two teams stack up at 5-on-5.

The Capitals will either play the Toronto Maple Leafs or Boston Bruins in the first round

We’ve known for a couple days now that the Washington Capitals will be the top seed in the East and have home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs, but we won’t know who their first round opponent is until the very last day of the regular season.

After Toronto’s 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday, the pool of teams the Capitals could play in the first round went from four to two. The Caps will open the playoffs against either the Leafs or the Boston Bruins.

We’ve got a better idea of who the Caps might face in the playoffs

Tuesday night was a busy one in the NHL. With thirteen games on the docket, we’ve now got a much better idea of how the standings might look after 82 games.

More importantly, we might know who the Caps’ opponent will be in the first round.
