Not only is Troy Brouwer adept at scoring goals, he’s also an accomplished photo-bomber. Check out these beauties. Our latest example comes from Sunday night when a Caps fan took a picture in front of the glass during warm-ups.

To celebrate the Washington Capitals 40th anniversary on Sunday night, CSN Washington unearthed amazing footage of Olie Kolzig getting drafted 26 years ago. The video shows Caps director of player personnel Jack Button selecting the mammoth goaltender from the WHL’s Tri-City Americans on June 17, 1989.
“And you know the Washington Capitals need a goalie,” current lead play-by-play man of HNIC Jim Hughson said way back then. “Obviously, they can’t think that Olie The Goalie, as he’s called with the Tri-City Americans, will step in and lead them to a championship right away, but the first goaltender comes from the Western Hockey League. He’s the eighth Western Leaguer taken in this draft. Olaf Kolzig to the Washington Capitals.”
Wow, those comments are perfect. Also perfect: the mullets.
Alex Ovechkin wasn’t the only Caps player to get banged up on Sunday. At some point during the game against the Ducks, Brooks Orpik got whacked in the face and had his Brooksie beak bloodied.
No matter, Greg Smith shoved something up Orpik’s nose so he could return to play…

Since December, Andre Burakovsky‘s usage in the Caps lineup has been curious as Barry Trotz has had to juggle playing time among veteran and younger players. Coming into Sunday’s game, the skilled young Swede had not received more than nine minutes of ice time since the beginning of February. He’d been used as a fourth-line center, a second-line winger, and a first line winger. He had been scratched in three of the team’s last four games.
But in Burakovsky’s return to the lineup on Sunday against Anaheim, The Burracuda scored twice off of two amazing primary assists from Alex Ovechkin. He played nearly 13 minutes on the team’s first line.
Hands off Beagle! We’re the only ones who are allowed to give him a hard time!
Low-scoring games suck, and that’s why the hockey gods gave us Ducks vs Caps with two backup goalies. Alex Ovechkin played out of his beautiful Russian skull.
Andrew Cogliano scored first, snatching a– get this– rebound off Justin Peters. Ovechkin wasn’t having any of that, so he tied it up off a faceoff. The Ducks went up again after Corey Perry beat Peters, who was totally screened. Again, Ovi wasn’t having any of that, so he converted an Ovi shot from the Ovi spot.
That all happened in the first twenty minutes. Marcus “Joe Hanson” Johansson got a pretty goal early in the second to give the Caps their first lead of the night. Then the Caps put the Ducks in a two-goal hole as Alex Ovehkin set up Andre Burakovsky for another pretty goal.
In the third, Andrew Cogliano struck again, thanks to Jakob Silfverberg (who I adore), and we headed into the third period with a one-goal game. Yet again, Alex Oveckin wasn’t having any of it. He stole the puck in the defensive zone, carried all the way up the ice, and served it to Andre Burakovsky, giving the rookie his first multi-goal game and securing the win for Washingon.
Caps beat Ducks 5-3! Woo!

Nearly 10 years ago, Alex Ovechkin told Tarik el Bashir, “I’m okay; Russian machine never breaks” after taking an errant shot to his leg at practice. Sunday, Ovechkin took that toughness to another level after checking Clayton Stoner into the Caps bench.
Dangerously, Stoner’s legs went airborne. His right skate swiped Ovechkin’s left leg from under the knee up to the mid-thigh.
The Anaheim Ducks’ Andrew Cogliano scored on Justin Peters in the game’s first minute. Alex Ovechkin responded 16 seconds later, saying, “Nuh uh, we ain’t going down that easy tonight.”
Four minutes and eleven seconds later, Corey Perry scored. Ovechkin answered few minutes later while on the power play.
It’s going to be one of those games. Ovi will not be going gentle into that good night.
Valentine’s Day didn’t work out well for the Caps, but they’re gonna have to get over it quickly. Reminds me of the Replacements’ song, “Valentine.”
Well if tonight belongs to you, tomorrow’s mine
I think Paul Westerberg meant something different by that, but last night certainly belonged to the Kings. Tonight at 8 PM on CSN, the Caps get a chance to own the day against the Ducks of Anaheim.
