Sunday afternoon, Lars Eller started the second half of his second Capitals season with a bang.
In the third period of a tied game against the Blues, Eller put home a rebound that sent a somewhat sleepy matinee crowd at Capital One Arena into a frenzy.
Even better, Eller’s daughter was in the building to see it.

Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 27th goal of the season Sunday against the St. Louis Blues. After the game, NBC Sports Washington’s Tarik El-Bashir asked Ovechkin to explain his team’s recent success on the power play. The team scored two power-play goals (Brett Connolly and Ovechkin) in the first time in a while.
Ovechkin’s response back to the press was unintentionally very funny.
TJ Oshie hasn’t been the same player since returning from his fourth-documented concussion in early December.
Ahead of Sunday’s matinee against the St. Louis Blues, Capitals head coach Barry Trotz tried to jumpstart the team’s co-leader in goals last season by putting him back on the top line with Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin. It worked.
Oshie snapped a five-game point-less streak all while having the best cheering squad at the game.

Alex Ovechkin’s goalscoring should be slowing due to his age. Instead Ovi’s leading the league in goals at age 32 and is on pace for over 50 for the eighth time in his legendary career.
One of the reasons why the Russian machine’s production remains 🔥 is due to his prowess on the power play. Ovechkin is lethal from the left face-off circle where he’s scored 37.6 percent of his 580 career goals.
Sunday in the Caps’ 4-3 OT win over the Blues, Ovechkin, from his office, scored his league-leading 27th goal of the season and his 220th career marker on the power play, which ranks him tenth all time.
After battling the Blues to a 3-3 tie in regulation, the Capitals received a clutch goal in overtime from Nicklas Backstrom to win their ninth straight game at home.
But it was what Backstrom did after the goal that made everyone grin ear-to-ear across the DC area.
The Washington Capitals hadn’t played a game since January 2, so I’m baffled why they looked exhausted against the St. Louis Blues at home on Sunday afternoon. But even an overwhelmed Caps team still have Ovi on it.
Brett Connolly gave the Caps the lead in the first period with a deflection of Alex Ovechkin’s shot, but the Blues scored twice in the second – once on the power play from Vladimir Tarasenko and another at evens from Steen.
The Caps continued to struggle in the third, but a trip by Jay Bouwmeester led directly to Alex Ovechkin’s 27th goal of the season – an Ovi Shot from the Ovi Spot™. That restored the tie, which Lars Eller promptly broke with an excellent goal on transition. A tricky deflection through traffic and credited to Carl Gunnarsson caught Holtby unaware to tie it again with four minutes left. Regulation ended like that. In overtime, Oshie gave Nicklas Backstrom a monster stretch pass, and Backy didn’t squander it.

Despite being scratched and missing games due to injury, Brett Connolly is about to reach the double digit mark in goals for the second straight season.
Connolly scored late in the first period to give the Caps a 1-0 lead.
Before the opening puck drop between the Blues and Capitals, things got kinda weird at the benches.
Brett Connolly and Evgeny Kuznetsov, who earlier in the year had a fist bump mishap go viral, chucked it up at the bench.
Then more magic happened.
It’s been five long days since the Caps last suited up for NHL action. This afternoon, a refreshed Washington squad faces the St. Louis Blues, who are battling for the Central division lead, kinda sorta. This game will be number 42 in the books, so we’re officially in the back half now.
