Mike Green Does the “Game Over” Thing: Caps beat Canes 4-3 (OT)
    Mike Green Game Over

It’s been a long time. The Washington Capitals are back in action, opening up their 2011-2012 season at home. Hosting the Carolina Hurricanes, the Caps have a lot of drama in their rear view, and a lot of questions to answer. Goalie drama, Alex Ovechkin’s return to glory, Sasha cares, the new guys, offensive doldrums. You’ve heard it all before. Get ready for some answers.

In the second period Eric Staal put the puck past a sucked-out Michal Neuvirth. Hooked up by a smart outlet pass from John Carlson, Alex Semin guided the puck in to tie it up. That near-goal Jason Chimera breakaway thing happened for the billionth time, but Jason finally hit his target. But Eric Staal tied it up early in the third by waiting in the right spot. On a climactic 5 on 3, gorgeous Brooks Laich returned the rebound. But with the extra skater, Jussi Jordache Jokinen snuck one past Neuvy. In a penalty-ridden OT, Mike Green served the puck into– and beyond– Boucher’s love-making region. Game over. Caps win 4-3 (OT).

Winter is Coming: Opening Day is Here!

Reader Max Duchaine (of Penguins in memoriam and History will be Red fame) created this video, inspired by the Winter is Coming promotion we’ve been running for the last couple months. The video does a good job recapping the not-quite-healed wounds from May and then what happened over the summer, as well as getting us amped for tonight.

    Good work, Max.

    Crash the net.

Video: Alex Ovechkin Back in America, Looks Lonely on the Ice

Capitals Captain Alex Ovechkin returned to DC today following a four-day excursion to Moscow to mourn the passing of his uncle. In an effort to remain sharp ahead of tomorrow’s season opener, he briefly took to the ice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex tonight and worked on his shot and stick-handling.

Poor guy. Someone please give him a hug.

Below the jump, check out a few more photos via the Capitals’ James Heuser.

Carolina Hurricanes Pregame: Eric Staal’s Rabbit-sized Family and the Jeff Skinner/Justin Bieber Hypothesis

[Editor’s note: We are proud to welcome writers Craig Brownstein and Doug Johnson to the Russian Machine! You might already know Craig and Doug from their gay-focused hockey blog, Puck Buddys. You are hereby required to follow them on Twitter: @PuckBuddys. Puck Buddys is increasing its scope from Caps-centric coverage to the whole NHL, so you’ll see C+D here a lot, especially for game previews. Please give them a very warm welcome and let us know if they break anything expensive.]

And now, a new season kicks off with an ominous sign of the Hockpocalypse – teh gays are now writing about the Caps for RMNB: a risky collaboration between the established Russian royalty (or oligarchy), and the gauche, nouveau riche upstarts.  The cheeky bastards of the hockey world will occasionally share insightful analysis, anatomy lessons, and keen fashion sense with a wider cross-section of the Caps fanbase. The questions on everyone’s lips?  1) Who’s going to embarrass the other first?  Answer: We’re demonstrating that right now. 2) How did RMNB end up with us? Answer: Dave Nichols of District Sports Page already grabbed all the talented free agents.

Kanooblian, a Work of Art Inspired by Mike Knuble

Mark Burrier is an artist (and my friend and colleague) from Frederick, Maryland. One of his many projects is a website called Rare Words, where users submit words that become the starting point for drawings. To ring in the new season, I submitted a word to the blog. It’s a word I use a lot: kanooblian. It means As of or pertaining to Mike Knuble’s net-crashing ways.

You’re gonna have to follow me past the jump to see the whole thing. You’ll be glad you did.

Winter is Coming in One Day
    Alex Ovechkin

Photo credit: Toni L. Sandys of the Washington Post

Editor’s note: To get you properly revved up for the season, each member of the RMNB crew will take a longing look back at some of our favorite goals from days gone by. You can call it nostalgia or cheap summer content, but it’s really a reminder: WINTER IS COMING.

Seeing a Steve Konowalchuk hat trick live with my dad and brother made me fall in love with hockey. Joe Juneau’s jamshot past Dominik Hasek made me wildly jump up and down as a teenager. But Alex Ovechkin’s first career playoff tally is my all-time favorite NHL goal.

    Here’s why.

Casting Call: Hockey Players, Hockey Fans, Guy Who Looks Like a Basset Hound

Are you a hockey fan or player in need of a cool story to tell people at parties? Then today is your lucky day. Our friends at Carlyn Davis Casting are looking for just your type for two upcoming commercial shoots.

    Here are the deets:

    Shoot #1

Hockey players, skaters and a goalie. Caucasian males between 20 and 35 years old.

Referee. Caucasian male between 35 and 45 years old.

You’re gonna have to be between 5’8″ and 5’11” and fit skate sizes around 10, 11, and 12. You must have excellent skating skills and hockey experience. You will be playing hockey players from the 1930’s, so a slender build is preferred.

Two slender males and one heavy (XL-2XL) male. Caucasian, between 5’8″ and 5’1″, 25 to 45 years old.  You will be on the ice without skates, so you’ll need excellent balance and must be comfortable playing/running/sliding around without skates.

This is for a commercial shoot in Maryland (Baltimore, mayhaps?) one day between November 16th and 18th.

    More after the jump!

Will Mathieu Perreault Make a Splash in 2011-12?

The hard part is over. Mathieu Perreault led the Capitals with five points in four preseason games and snatched the final roster spot from favorites Cody Eakin and Mattias Sjogren.

Last season he showed the ability to drive puck possession, finishing with the fourth best Corsi relative to the competition on the team, behind only Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and Alexander Semin.

Consistency, however, was a bigger issue. He earned all fourteen of his points in just nine of his 35 games played and wasn’t able to claim a center spot that was up for grabs.

Video: Caps Prospect Evgeny Kuznetsov Scores Third-Straight GWG, Celebrates With Ovechkin-esque Leap Into Boards

After Traktor’s 4-3 victory over Barys Tuesday, Head Coach Valery Belousov revealed to the media that Evgeny Kuznetsov played sick. Belousov didn’t specify what type of bug Kuznetsov came down with, but with regulars Deron Quint and Raymond Giroux sitting out due to food poisoning, it was pretty easy to connect the dots.
