Mathieu Perreault Traded to Anaheim Ducks
    perry

Mike Vogel has reported that Mathieu Perreault has been traded to the Anaheim Ducks. The Caps will receive Anaheim’s fourth-round pick in 2014 and minor-league LW John Mitchell.

Perreault was consistently among the Washington Capitals’ best possession players. He was an excellent passer. He was the team’s best celebrator. He didn’t know he was tiny. One time– in a big game against the Bruins– and without Ovechkin in the lineup— Perreault scored a hat trick. WITH HIS FACE.

Matty Perreault is a plucky little French Canadian sumbitch, and Bruce Boudreau’s Anaheim Ducks will be better for having him.

(Note: Perreault and his celebrations were going to be today’s countdown post. I guess we’ll just skip that now.)

With a Day Until Opening Day Roster Deadline, The Caps Still Have Questions

Tyson Strachan didn’t make the team; will Tom Wilson? (Photo credit: Geoff Burke/USA Today Sports)

With the deadline to submit opening-day rosters approaching at 5:00 PM Tuesday, the Washington Capitals moved towards finalizing their 23-player roster with a flurry of moves on Sunday.

The Caps assigned defensemen Michal Cajkovsky, Dmitry Orlov, and Tyson Strachan (who cleared waivers at noon) and forward Dane Byers to the American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. They have also placed forward Joel Rechlicz on waivers. Today was the final day players could be put on waivers before rosters must be set, meaning the Caps won’t be able to demote any more players who have those rights.

That leaves Washington with 21 players on the roster (13 forwards, six defensemen and two goaltenders) and three prospects trying to crack the lineup: Connor Carrick, Tom Wilson, and Michael Latta.

Alex Ovechkin Carries the Olympic Torch, Calls It The Best Moment of His Life (GIFs)

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin had the best moment of his life and you slept through the whole thing. Ovi indeed became the first Russian to carry the Olympic torch around 6 AM eastern time. It will now travel through 30 Greek cities before starting its long and ridiculous journey through Russia (and outer space!).

The ceremony in Ancient Olympia, Greece, was elaborate. There were seemingly hundreds of speeches spanning 45 minutes. There was a 15-minute dance number. Doves were released. No, seriously. Then it was Ovi time.

Mikhail Grabovski and Troy Brouwer’s Celebration Fail (GIF)

The Caps lost 4-3 to the Blackhawks in overtime tonight, but that doesn’t matter. Instead, let’s remember this game for the time Mikhail Grabovski and Troy Brouwer’s failed to celebrate correctly. The second line clearly needs to develop some more chemistry here or it’s going to be a loooooooong year.

Alex Ovechkin’s Really Excited to Carry the Olympic Torch, Dodges Gay Rights Question Again

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was a busy man last night. After scoring two goals and breaking the goal cam in the Capitals’ 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, he left Verizon Center in a rush and boarded a jet. But not before some photos and some not-so-subtle product placement.

3 Days Out: One Last Preseason Game, Thank Goodness
    3

I don’t like preseason hockey. I love hockey, sure, but preseason hockey is a weird animal. The player talent is all over the place. Marginal players are eager to make a statement by spilling buckets of blood (theirs or others’), good players look superhuman because they’re matched up against scrubs, and stat people don’t seem to care much for the inscrutable details like who actually scored the goals. Plus, I’m naturally skeptical about prospect players, who are often overhyped and rarely turn out to be viable NHL players. The whole exercise is wearying.

That said, we got a lot out of this (heavily televised) preseason: the rise of Connor Carrick, the rise of Nathan Walker, Recker vs Looch, some fancy Ovi stickwork, a crab on the ice, Joel Rechlicz winning a game using actual hockey, and Ovi looking tough.

But it’s over now. Saturday’s night game against the Cup-defending Chicago Blackhawks is the final exhibition game of the year. After that: real games for real points. Real net-crashing. Real line-up controversy. Real Caps hockey.

    Bring it on.

Brooks Laich Says He Will Play in the Caps Season Opener

Brooks Laich‘s last year has been miserable (minus this moment), and the new 2013-14 season hasn’t started any better either. After playing in just nine games last season due to a groin injury he suffered during the lockout, Laich hurt himself 10 minutes into the first day of training camp.

“It was a left hip flexor,” Laich said that day after leaving the ice. “It is completely non-related to what happened to me last year. We’ll monitor it day-by-day, and it should come back very very quickly.”

Three weeks later, Laich has played only one preseason game and he’s barely skated. Hip flexors are notorious for being lingering injuries.

According to The Washington Post’s Chelsea Janes, however, Laich will play in the Washington Capitals season opener on Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks. Head coach Adam Oates confirmed that news as well.

Alex Ovechkin Destroys the Net Cam Again (Video)

When Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored his second goal against the Flyers on Saturday, the three-time Hart trophy winner decided to punctuate it by destroying something.

Tom Wilson Fights Brayden Schenn And Makes Him Bleed, Scores Goal (GIFs)
    wilson-punch

The Wilson punch that ended the fight.

If Tom Wilson doesn’t make the Washington Capitals roster out of training camp, he will return to the Plymouth Whalers knowing he did all he could. On Friday night, Wilson had a goal, an impressive fight, and drew a penalty in another fantastic game for the 19-year-old Canadian.

Five minutes after Mikhail Grabovski absorbed a dirty elbow from Zac Rinaldo in the first period, Wilson stuck up for his teammate and fought the much shorter Brayden Schenn.

    It was brutal. Brutal. Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutal.

Zac Rinaldo’s Dirty Elbow to Mikhail Grabovski’s Head (GIF)
    grabo-elbow-to-head

Mikhail Grabovski has had a sterling preseason. After resolving his visa issues, Grabo wasted no time establishing himself as a Belarusian assist machine, endearing himself to his teammates and Caps fans in the process.

Enter Zac Rinaldo, notorious Philly antagonist (317 PIMs in 98 games). The Flyer goon zeroed in on Grabo in the corner behind Neuvirth’s net. Rinaldo’s elbow hit Grabovski’s head, dropping the Caps center to the ice. Grabovski skated back to the bench under his own power and continued playing in the game. Rinaldo, on the other hand, received a five-minute major and game misconduct.
