The Capitals are Basically on Furlough

After Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the Dallas Stars, I figured their four days off this week would be a good thing. The team would get a chance to work on its 5v5 play, and the distance of time would give us a bit more clarity on a chaotic, young season.

    Nope. I was wrong.

The Capitals don’t intend to tinker with their lines just yet, while the rest of the league seems dedicated to making Caps fans miserable. It’s been a four-day break in which players are still getting paid, but everyone still seems as grumpy as a non-essential government worker.

Mike Green’s New NHL 94-Inspired Game Over T-Shirt
    NHL94

This game is older than me.

“It’s not what you wear, but how you wear it,” Washington Capitals defenseman Steve Oleksy said of Mike Green last month, as he talked about the team’s best dressed player. On a team with Russians in oversized sweatshorts featuring massive corporate logos, Green’s style of faux hawks and Oxfords stands out for its understated elegance.

Now, Greenie wants to bring some that swag to your pathetic wardrobe. As we noted last spring, he came out with his own clothing line, with the first run selling out in days. One of the latest additions, though, deserves special attention: Green’s very own “Game Over” shirt, a reference to the nickname coined due to his remarkable record of ending sudden-death match-ups.

The Best Caps-Themed Selfie Ever Taken
    caps-sth-sixflags1

Washington Capitals fan/RMNB reader Sami took the photo of the night at Tuesday’s annual Caps’ season-ticket holder party at Six Flags America. You probably have already seen it. Eric Fehr tweeted it out, and both Tom Wilson and Connor Carrick retweeted it.

Sami, holding up her iPhone 4, took a front-facing photo of her three friends: Brenna (front row to the left), Zoe (second row to the left), and Danielle (second row to the right) as they rode the Superman rollercoaster. In the background, Caps players make silly faces. Braden Holtby looks apprehensive, Eric Fehr shows off his pearly whites, Tom Wilson gives an enthusiastic thumbs up, and little old Connor Carrick (who I trust was tall enough to ride this ride) manages to lean his head just above Fehr’s.

Study this photo. Look at it carefully. It has more layers than one of my website comp PSD’s (and no, I didn’t name the layers).

Danielle, who emailed us the group’s photos and kindly gave us permission to publish, was really excited. “It was really cool to see what happened to Sami’s photo,” Danielle wrote. “Because later on when we were visiting the players autograph tables, they knew exactly who we were from the roller coaster and mentioned that they saw the picture on Twitter.”

Tuesday was Zoe’s birthday. (Happy belated birthday, Zoe!) Danielle tells us that many players made a big deal about it.

The girls got autographs from Mike Green, Aaron Volpatti, Connor Carrick, John Carlson, Eric Fehr, Joel Ward, Marcus Johansson, and hahaha best Ovechkin.

Below are the rest of their photos from the night. Looks like a great time.

Filip Forsberg Scores First NHL Goal, Celebrates With Ovechkin Leap Into Boards (GIFs)

    WOOOOO! (Photo credit: John Russell)

The Filip Forsberg/Martin Erat trade still elicits strong reactions from Caps fans. (Like I’m warning you now, you’re going to want to bring a hatchet into the comments below because this one’s gonna get gory.)

Adam Oates has put Erat — George McPhee’s 32-year-old, $4.5 million toy — on the fourth line where he averages under 8 minutes a game. For Caps fans already unhappy with the trade, Erat’s modest utilization had them grinding their teeth.

After Tuesday night, those fans are gonna need a mouthguard. Maybe dentures. Forsberg scored the first goal of his NHL career, a snap shot on the power play, during Nashville’s 3-2 win over the Minnesota Wild. Congrats, kid.

Braden Holtby Signs a Baby …And Why Not?

A few years ago, I was at Karl Alzner and John Carlson’s kids press conference at the Caps Convention. I remember someone asking Alzner what the weirdest thing he ever signed was. A whip, he answered, because who even has a whip.

On Tuesday night, Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby had his own weird autograph moment at the Caps’ annual season-ticket holder party at Six Flags. Hotlby’s thing was cuter than Alzner’s though. Holtby signed a baby.

Joel Ward: Karl Alzner and John Carlson Had to “Superman-Carry Me Out of the Top of the Bathroom”
    ward-trapped-in-bathroom3

    Photo: @JohnCarlson74

Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward joined former NHL players Jamie McLennan and Jeff O’Neill on TSN 1050 Radio this afternoon. Yes, he spent almost the entirety of the interview talking about his fun excursion in Dallas where he got locked in a hotel bathroom. Better that than his even-strength goal differential.

Here is a transcription of most of the interview. The Big Cheese has a new nickname.

Craig Berube Becomes Third Player From Caps’ Stanley Cup Final Team to Become NHL Head Coach
    craig-berube-named-flyers-coach

When Peter Laviolette was panic-fired Monday morning for his team shooting 2.4% through three games at even strength, I laughed. Then I thought about the five-year contract they gave Vincent Lecavalier over the offseason, and I laughed some more. Then I thought about how they traded Vezina-winning goalie Sergei Bobrovsky one season and then bought out Ilya Bryzgalov the next, choosing to pay the Russian $23 million over the next 14 years not to play, tears started rolling down my face. Paul HoLOLmgren, you are teh best.

Once I got past that (it was difficult), I was quite happy for long-time Washington Capitals enforcer Craig Berube, who was named the Flyers’ new head coach (Not interim!).

Berube becomes the third player from the Capitals’ 1997-98 Stanley Cup Final team to become a head coach in the NHL joining former Capital captains Dale Hunter and Adam Oates. With former Caps’ 98 Cup Final players Calle Johansson and Olie Kolzig serving as assistants in Washington (Kolzig is goaltending coach), I wondered how many other players from that very-talented, overachieving team are now coaching in hockey.

    The number is staggering.

Andre Burakovsky Scores Five Points in One Game

Burakovsky is interviewed after being named first star of the game. (Photo via DaneFox)

Washington Capitals 2013 first-round pick Andre Burakovsky had his best game in the OHL so far on Saturday. He was named first star of the game after scoring a goal and recording four assists in the Erie Otters’ 8-4 win over the North Bay Battalion.

Connor Carrick Was the First Defenseman From the 2012 NHL Draft to Play in the NHL
    connor-carrick

The Washington Capitals had two selections in the first round of the 2012 draft. They had the 11th pick, received from the Colorado Avalanche as part of the Semyon Varlamov deal, and the 16th pick. Entering that weekend, many general managers talked about how top-heavy the draft was with talented defensemen. In fact, eight of the top ten picks were rearguards, which allowed the Capitals to draft the best European skater in the draft, Filip Forsberg at number eleven. Five picks later, they also selected Tom Wilson, who made the team out of training camp this season.

In the fifth round, the Capitals selected their first defenseman of the day (and one of three overall), the 5’11” Connor Carrick, out of the United States National Team Development Program. 46 defensemen were selected before Carrick was snatched up at pick 137. A lot of people had never heard of him at that point.

Funny. A full year later, Carrick is a household name among Caps fans and was the first defenseman out of the 2012 draft to play in the NHL — by about 40 minutes.
