Caps vs Canucks Pregame: The Goon Returns
    CapsHabs_23

Off since Sunday, the Caps get back to business tonight against the Canucks. Despite having a general manager who seems to be actively trying to make his team worse, the Canucks are in the hunt for a playoff spot. Led by the Sedin twins, Vancouver is 6-2-2 in their last 10 games.

For the Caps, noted goon Marcus Johansson returns to the lineup after serving a two-game suspension for being a dirty, dirty player.

The Canucks have picked up 10 of their points via the overtime loser point and have a minus-15 goal differential. This isn’t a very good team. If the Caps are on their game and the randomness of sixty minutes of hockey doesn’t sabotage them, another two points will be in the bank.

7 PM game time on CSN. Peter’s got your recap.

Team Record Possession PDO Power Play Penalty Kill
    Washington Capitals 32-7-3 51.7% 102.1 26.6% 85.4%
    Vancouver Canucks 17-16-10 47.2% 99.9 17.4% 79.6%

The Capitals, and now their AHL affiliate, are hoarding Cup-winning centers.

Thursday morning, the Hershey Bears announced that they signed two-time Stanley Cup Champion Scott Gomez to a professional tryout. The 36-year-old center had played 21 games for the Blues this season before being put on unconditional waivers December 30. Gomez, who was averaging 11 minutes of ice time, had one goal and seven assists.

According to Blues coach Ken Hitchcock, Gomez’s release was necessitated because the team got healthy.

Michael Latta Thinks Tom Wilson’s Favorite Player is Michael Latta

I was recently pointed to a Tumblr post containing an essential page from the Caps 2014-15 program. It’s three of Tom Wilson’s teammates, Michael Latta, Jason Chimera, and Joel Ward, competing to see who knows the Capitals winger best. This is shocking, I know, but Wilson’s roommate Michael Latta won.

Tom Green To Do “Unleash the Fury” Live This Weekend
    tomgreen

Comedian Tom Green will be in town this weekend for a pair of shows at the Arlington Drafthouse. By way of Elliot in the Morning, we hear Green will also attend a Caps game, either Thursday’s game against the Canucks or maybe Sunday’s date with the Rangers, to perform his “unleash the fury” cheer live.

Caps Will Honor Alex Ovechkin Before Thursday’s Game Against Canucks

    Photo: Rafael Suanes

You’re going to want to get to Verizon Center on time for the Caps-Canucks game Thursday night. The Capitals will be holding a pre-game ceremony at 7pm honoring Alex Ovechkin and his 500th career goal. Ovechkin’s parents, Mikhail and Tatyana, and fiancé Nastya Shubskaya will join the Russian machine on the ice. The team will be presenting him a “special gift.”

My guess is that they’re giving him 501 Powerball tickets.

We always knew Alex Ovechkin was gr8 on and off the ice. On Wednesday we learned more about Ovechkin the teammate.

In his weekly segment with the Sports Junkies, Brooks Laich revealed that, in a recent season, teammate Alexander Ovechkin bought every single teammate Breitling watches. (Laich couldn’t remember the exact season but said it was the season that Alex had “cleaned up with the trophies,” so it could’ve been 2007-08; when Ovi won the Rocket Richard, Art Ross, Lester B. Pearson, and Hart trophies; or 2012-13, the most recent year that he won the Richard and Hart.)

Breitling watches are not cheap. They retail anywhere from $3,000 – 9,825 each. Alex Ovechkin spent at least $90,000 on watches for his team.

The Washington Capitals’ Club Scarlet hosted Hockey ‘N Heels Tuesday night at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. This members-only event took about 200 fans through different aspects of the game from up close. Participants played broom ball with Evgeny Kuznetsov and Stan Galiev, took photobooth photos with Aaron Ness, practiced slapshots, and learned how to use a glove and blocker with Philipp Grubauer. After a busy first half, fans headed up stairs to learn more from the Caps’ coaches, equipment staff, refs, and CSN commentators Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin.

Dmitry Orlov and Nate Schmidt Thriving In Top-Four Role

    Photo: Rafael Suanes

For the past eight games, the Caps have been without blue-line regulars Brooks Orpik (who has missed the past 28 games) and John Carlson. While there’s some gray area as to whether this duo was being used as the team’s first or second defensive pair when both were healthy this season, they were unquestionably a heavily relied upon top-four pairing.

Since Carlson and Orpik have both been out, Dmitry Orlov and Nate Schmidt have been reunited as defensive partners on the Caps second pairing. This duo was fantastic for the team as the third pairing before Orpik got injured. While Schmidt has been playing in the top-four since Orpik went down, this is Orlov’s first time in the top-four this season and the first chance this duo has had to prove whether they can thrive in a larger role.

While small sample size warnings apply (eight games), so far the pairing has shown they are more than capable of not only handling, but also excelling in, a top-four role.

Justin Williams Remembers to Grab Alex Ovechkin’s Milestone Puck, Wes Johnson Announces No. 500
    justin-williams-2

On Sunday, Alex Ovechkin scored his 500th career goal, becoming the 43rd player in NHL history to accomplish the feat. I said on Monday night after our 11th article relating to the goal, and I will say it again during our 12th: there were so many tiny, wonderful moments contained inside that one, we’re still sorting through them all.

Over the offseason, three-time Stanley Cup champion and man nicknamed Mr. Game Seven, Justin Williams, said that he signed with the Capitals because his son Jaxon thought Alex Ovechkin was “the best.”

While Williams didn’t assist on the tally, he was on the ice when Ovechkin scored. And just like he has been all throughout his career, Williams was calm under fire, remembering to pick up the milestone puck before joining in on the team’s celebration.
