Nicklas Backstrom and Christian Djoos bring Stanley Cup to Gavlerinken Arena, introduce the ‘Djoos Effect’

Have you ever heard of “the Djoos effect”? I think no one has. Until today.

During his day with the Stanley Cup, Christian Djoos invited fellow native of Gavle, Caps superstar centre man Nicklas Backstrom to share the joy with him at their old rink, Gavlerinken Arena. But during the interviews, conducted by host Henrik Harrysson from center ice, things got a bit awkward for the rookie Djoos.

Nicklas Backstrom and Christian Djoos receive City of Gavle award

The Capitals’ Stanley Cup victory was a dream come true for players and staff. It also was an accomplishment for the cities and small towns that raised them.

Saturday, as the Stanley Cup today made its way to Gavle, Sweden, Caps players Nicklas Backstrom and Christian Djoos received an honor similar to ones TJ Oshie and Matt Niskanen received from their hometowns.

Nicklas Backstrom receives Stanley cup at Gavle home overlooking Baltic Sea

After spending a week in Canada, the Stanley Cup has returned to the continent of Europe.

After making stops for the first time in Lars Eller’s native Denmark and Andre Burakovsky’s hometown of Malmo, Sweden, the NHL’s championship trophy is now in the loving arms of Nicklas Backstrom, who evidently cannot stop smiling this summer.

Backstrom hosted a family party at his Gavle home, which according to the Capitals, overlooks the Baltic Sea.

A recap of Andre Burakovsky’s day with the Stanley Cup in Malmo, Sweden

On Thursday the Stanley Cup World Tour finally reached Sweden. I say finally, because for André Burakovsky, this day couldn’t come soon enough.

Prior to his own day with the Cup, Dre made a surprise visit at Jakub Vrana’s celebration in the Czech Republic and yesterday, he just couldn’t stop himself from suddenly appearing at Lars Eller’s day in Copenhagen.

For the first time ever, the Stanley Cup will make a stop in Malmo, the third largest city in Sweden. On August 9, Andre Burakovsky will take the legendary trophy to his hometown.

Brokenhearted Andre Burakovsky shares condolences after former teammate’s son, Oliver Mattsson, dies at age of 14

On Sunday night, Capitals forward André Burakovsky posted a photo on Instagram of a youth hockey player. He did so because he faced a tragic loss.

14-year-old Oliver Mattsson, son of former Tre Kronor and AHL player Jesper Mattsson, passed away.

With Stanley Cup in sight, Nicklas Backstrom and Christian Djoos’s fathers realize they have nothing left to teach their sons about hockey

“He’s from Gävle, you know. Grumpy, like his dad.”

Capitals veteran star Nicklas Bäckström has taken Christian Djoos under his wing during his rookie season. And, when the young defenseman punched Golden Knights forward James Neal in the face, Bäckström had a good laugh.

Peter Bondra’s son David scores first career World Championship goal for Team Slovakia

Like father like son. On Thursday, David Bondra, son of Washington Capitals legend Peter Bondra, scored his first World Championship goal for Team Slovakia in a game versus France.

The goal gave Slovakia a 1-0 lead early in the first period. Slovakia would win 3-1.

David Bondra wears his Dad’s number 12.

Capitals sign Axel Jonsson-Fjällby to a three-year, entry-level contract

The Washington Capitals just announced the signing of Axel Jonsson-Fjällby, a 20-year-old Swedish winger, to a three-year, $2.58 million contract, starting next season. The entry-level contract will pay Jonsson-Fjällby an annual average value of $860k at the NHL level and $70k in the minors. He will receive a signing bonus for every year of the contract that increases $5k per season, starting from $80k during the 2018-19 campaign.

According to CapFriendly, the contract was signed on May 1st. Jonsson-Fjallby will attend the 2018 Capitals Development Camp.

During the SHL playoffs, Capitals assistant GM Ross Mahoney went to Sweden to watch the speedy winger perform live. He had previously attended development camp during the summer twice.

Jonsson-Fjällby, drafted in the fifth round of the 2016 entry draft, had a breakout year both in his Swedish club Djurgården and on the international stage, making an impact both in the JWC and the Tre Kronor-team. Playing fourth line minutes in the regular season, Jonsson-Fjällby registered 16 points (7G, 9A).

Axel Jonsson-Fjällby scores first career points for Tre Kronor

Over the past weekend, Capitals prospect Axel Jonsson-Fjällby made his debut on the international stage. In a pre-World Championship tournament (Carlson Hockey Games) held in Jaroslavl, Russia, and Pardubice, Czech Republic, the 20-year-old played his first two games for the senior level Swedish National Team.

Tre Kronor lost both games to Czech Republic and Finland, but Jonsson-Fjällby had a personal milestone, scoring his first career points for the team.
