Report: John Carlson suffered a fractured skull and severed temporal artery after taking slap shot to the head

The Washington Capitals have been without star defenseman John Carlson since December 23 when the veteran blueliner took a direct slap shot to the head from Winnipeg Jets rearguard Brenden Dillon.

Carlson immediately left the game, bleeding profusely on the ice. He has not played a game since, leaving the team without their number one defenseman for 34 games and counting. Months after the injury, Carlson has inched towards recovery. He accompanied the team for part of their western road trip, and began to practice with the team in a no-contact jersey last week.

Now, Tarik El-Bashir, via a report in The Athletic, has revealed the extent of Carlson’s injury. The details are pretty scary.

Former Capitals winger Alex Chiasson riding three-game goal streak in return to NHL with Red Wings

Former Capitals winger Alex Chiasson had a delayed start to the NHL portion of his 2022-23 season but has had quite an explosive first few games since joining the Detroit Red Wings. The 32-year-old forward is currently riding a three-game goal streak, with all three markers coming on the power play.

Chiasson, who played for the Caps’ Stanely Cup-winning team in 2018, joined the Red Wings at the trade deadline after spending most of the campaign in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Nic Dowd sets new career high in goals with 14 games left to go in season

Nic Dowd continued his excellent season Tuesday night.

The fourth-line center scored his 12th goal of the season setting a new career high.

The milestone goal came in the second half of the third period after Dowd put a shot on net from the left circle just after the expiration of Washington’s power play. Though Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin stopped the initial shot, Dowd caught the rebound to send the puck into the net.

Peter Laviolette has ‘no idea’ if Alex Ovechkin will play against the Sabres

Alex Ovechkin was notably absent in the Capitals’ 5-3 loss to the New York Rangers on Tuesday, missing the game due to a lower-body injury.

Ovechkin has been absent since Monday, when he missed the team’s practice at Madison Square Garden. At the time, the team cited maintenance as the reason for the absence, but whatever troubled Ovechkin proved severe enough to keep him out of Tuesday’s game.

The Capitals were also short Sonny Milano, who missed the game due to a non-COVID illness.

The missing players will have little time to recover if they want to get into the next game. The Caps will return to DC for the second half of a back-to-back, playing the Buffalo Sabres at home on Wednesday night.

Lars Eller registers first point with Avalanche, breaking 15-game pointless streak

Former Capital Lars Eller scored his first point on Monday since the trade-deadline deal that sent him to the Colorado Avalanche.

The point, a primary assist, came in his seventh game with the Avs, an 8-4 blowout against the Montreal Canadiens.

Rasmus Sandin now has a record-setting eight points in four games with Capitals: ‘I’m just having a lot of fun.’

In less than two weeks as a Washington Capital, Rasmus Sandin has greatly impressed. The 23-year-old Swede earned himself another hat trick of assists on Saturday night against the New York Islanders. He grabbed them on goals from Dylan Strome, TJ Oshie, and Nicklas Backstrom.

After a dazzling three-assist debut with the team, Sandin now has two three-point nights in only four games with the Caps. In that span, he has earned one goal and seven assists for eight total points.

Garnet Hathaway scores first goal with Bruins, tallies game-winner in team’s 50th win of the season

Garnet Hathaway just helped the Boston Bruins make NHL history.

Saturday afternoon, the former Capitals forward scored the game-winner for the Boston Bruins, his first goal with the team. The marker against the Detroit Red Wings came with less than ten minutes to go with the game tied at two goals apiece.

Jakub Vrana’s first goal with St. Louis Blues comes from behind the net

Once given the opportunity, it sure didn’t take long for Jakub Vrana to get back on the scoreboard at the NHL level.

After being traded from the Detroit Red Wings to the St. Louis Blues, the popular former Capital scored his first goal in only his second game with the team.

And boy, was it a doozy.

Wish comes true for Alex Ovechkin fan, Nate ‘The Gr8′ Wessel, as he becomes honorary Capitals’ starter

The wish of 14-year-old Nate Wessel officially came true as the Washington Capitals faced the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night.

After signing a two-day contract and practicing with the team on Wednesday, the youth hockey player joined the team on the ice at Capital One Arena as one of its honorary starters.

Nate was born with a heart condition and had three open-heart surgeries as a kid. A player for the Howard Huskies and his junior varsity team in high school, Nate’s dream was to be a Washington Capitals player.

Vitek Vanecek won’t start against Washington Capitals in first return to DC

Vitek Vanecek will not start against the Washington Capitals in his first game back at Capital One Arena with the New Jersey Devils, Thursday. Instead, Akira Schmid will be in net for New Jersey per NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti.

It’ll be Schmid’s second start in a week after a shootout loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday and his first career start against Washington.

Schdmid has posted a.926 save percentage in 12 games this season, ranking third among all goalies with 10 or more games.
