How to buy the Washington Capitals’ new cherry blossom merchandise

The Washington Capitals announced a line of cherry-blossom-inspired merchandise on Wednesday, designed by DC artist Taylor Kampa Olson. The design features a navy and pink Capitals logo, framed by hand-drawn renditions of DC’s iconic blossoms.

Players will wear the special jerseys in warmups on April 2nd against the New York Rangers, with the jerseys then going up for auction to benefit the MSE Foundation.

Though the jerseys won’t see a wide release, fans can purchase hats, tees, and sweatshirts with Kampa Olson’s artwork. The merchandise will release between now and April 2nd, with some already available.

It’s confirmed. NHL players hate Tom Wilson, but wish he was on their team, too.

The NHLPA released the results of its annual player poll Wednesday, confirming what Caps fans know to be true. Tom Wilson might be easy to hate as an opponent, but he’s still a guy you want on your side.

One question in the NHLPA poll, which surveyed 626 NHL players from all 32 teams, asked which player do you least enjoy playing against, but would like to have on your team?

8.1% of NHL players named Tom Wilson, earning him third place in the league.

Capitals respond to frustrating 7-6 loss to Columbus Blue Jackets: ‘There’s obviously something going wrong’

The Capitals dropped their third game in a row on Tuesday night. This time it came to the Metro Division’s last-place Columbus Blue Jackets. Though they garnered one point in the standings for getting the game to overtime that isn’t enough at this point of the season and they gave up seven goals to a team long since out of playoff contention.

An explosive start put the Caps up 3-1 in the first, but a series of defensive failures saw them give up six goals in two periods, plus the OT winner. Even worse, the disappointing game came after a touching pregame ceremony celebrating Alex Ovechkin passing Gordie Howe as the NHL’s second-leading, all-time goal scorer.

With losses piling up and only 10 games left in the regular season, the Capitals vented their frustrations after the game.

Alex Ovechkin scores on Gr802 Night and passes Wayne Gretzky for most 40-goal seasons in NHL history

Alex Ovechkin just can’t stop breaking records.

The Capitals’ captain scored his 40th goal of the season Tuesday night, mere minutes after the ceremony honoring his 802nd goal which put him past Gordie Howe for second place on the all-time goal-scoring list had concluded. Ovechkin now has 13 total 40-goal seasons in his career, passing Wayne Gretzky for the most in NHL history.

Capitals hold GR802 Night ceremony to honor Alex Ovechkin passing Gordie Howe for second on all-time goals list

The Washington Capitals honored Alex Ovechkin with GR802 Night at Capital One Arena on Tuesday night.

The ceremony celebrated Ovi passing Gordie Howe for second place on the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring list, which he did with his 802nd career goal on December 23rd.

Brad Marchand on Garnet Hathaway and Tyler Bertuzzi’s trades to the Bruins: ‘All the guys I hate are now on our team’

The Washington Capitals traded Garnet Hathaway and Dmitry Orlov to Boston ahead of the trade deadline and both have fit in instantly with the Bruins. Orlov has seen an offensive explosion which earned him First Star of the Week honors and the nickname Bobby Orrlov, while Hathaway’s gritty, passionate play has matched perfectly with the Bruins’ rough-and-tumble style.

The Bruins also landed forward Tyler Bertuzzi at the deadline, getting the gritty goal-scorer from the Detroit Red Wings for a first-round pick.

Known pest, Brad Marchand, had a personal reason for liking the trades. He no longer has to play against Hathaway and Bertuzzi, two players he formerly hated.

Capitals frustrated after non-call on hit to Evgeny Kuznetsov, praise TJ Oshie for fighting Matt Dumba

Evgeny Kuznetsov left Sunday’s Capitals-Wild game early in the third period, following a blindside hit by Wild rearguard Matt Dumba. Kuznetsov could be seen writhing on the ice following the check, which was deemed clean by the officials. He would not return to the game.

Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette did not have an update on Kuznetsov’s status, but he expressed concern over the hit during a terse and short postgame press conference.

Sharks admit ‘hockey is not for everyone’ as James Reimer refuses to wear team’s Pride Night jersey

The San Jose Sharks held their annual Pride Night celebration on Saturday evening. The night was supposed to celebrate diversity and inclusion in hockey, but San Jose garnered headlines for a different reason.

Sharks goaltender James Reimer sat out during warmups so he could avoid wearing the team’s Pride jersey. Unlike other recent NHL teams faced with the same predicament, the Sharks continued on with the promotion as their teammate stayed inside the locker room.

The Sharks pride sweaters featured a shark on the crest holding two sticks with rainbow tape inside a heart and Love Wins patches. The jerseys are being auctioned off with a portion of proceeds going to Adolescent Counseling Services, a charity providing support to LGBTQ+ youth and families.

Nicklas Backstrom on the Capitals playoff chances: ‘It’s do or die, so you’ve just got to go out there and fight’

The Capitals were hit hard by their loss to the St. Louis Blues on Friday night. The Blues took a 4-0 lead through two periods, and the Capitals failed to recover despite two goals in the third. Though the team is attempting to make a desperate last push for the playoffs, they now have a record of 5-4-1 in their last 10 games.

Should they fail to move up in the standings, it would be the first year without playoffs for the Caps since the 2013-14 season. With that outcome looking increasingly likely, Capitals players expressed frustration that they once again failed to secure a win.

‘Nobody’s healthy in there right now’: Peter Laviolette provides injury updates on Darcy Kuemper, Nick Jensen

The Capitals are once again dealing with injury woes, this time affecting goaltender Darcy Kuemper and defenseman Nick Jensen.

Jensen sustained an upper-body injury Wednesday night against the Buffalo Sabres and did not practice Saturday morning with the team. Kuemper initially came out for practice, but left early following a conversation with Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette.

After practice, Laviolette provided updates on the pair’s status.
