Team Russia Ditches Their Morning Skate and Plays Soccer

Ahead of its quarter-final matchup Thursday with Canada, Team Russia assistant coach Igor Zakharkin ordered his players to abandon the team’s scheduled morning practice and instead play soccer at Rapid Stadium in Bratislava. Much like former Capitals head coach Ron Wilson, who would arrange team-building bowling outings when the Caps were struggling, Zakharkin is looking to take pressure off of his team.

Russia, who has lost two straight games and is 3-3 overall in the tournament, has not gelled at any point during their time in Slovakia and has played in five straight one-goal games. The dominant team that had won 27 straight World Championship games last year has not appeared. If they lose against Canada, Russia will be eliminated.

Zakharkin spoke with Sovietsky Sport’s Dmitri Ponomarenko and Vitaly Slavin about his decision to avoid the rink today and also discussed the shirtless soccer goalie above, Alex Ovechkin. Fedor Fedin has your translation.

Photos: Alex Ovechkin Arrives in Slovakia for Worlds

After getting the green light from the Capitals organization on breakdown day, Alex Ovechkin left the United States Friday for the 2011 IIHF World Championships in Slovakia. Ovechkin, who had to endure an eight hour flight from DC to Vienna, was then driven by IIHF representatives to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, just in time for a noon practice at Orange Stadium. He had almost no break.

In the wake of the news that Osama bin Laden has been killed, people — particularly young people — gathered around the White House. Since game two of the Washington Capitals’ series with the Tampa Bay Lightning had just ended when the news broke, a good number of fans were in presence.

Snoop Dogg Wears an Ovechkin Jersey at UMBC’s Quadmania

As both an alumus of UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County) and a former member of the school’s Student Events Board, I beamed with pride when I heard that Snoop Dogg would be performing at this year’s Quadmania. Quadmania, which is a year-end festival meant to rally the university’s students before finals, has hosted acts such as N.E.R.D., Kanye West, Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, and All American Rejects in years past.  Lo and behold, when my friends started posting their pictures on Facebook from the show Friday night, my jaw dropped to the floor when I saw Snoop rocking the red and wearing an Ovechkin jersey. We were stunned when we saw one of our t-shirts featured in ESPN The Magazine. So stunned, we said and I quote:

Since we’re on a bit of a hot streak, the next thing we’re going to work on is getting CSN Washington anchor Russ Thaler to scream “RUSSIAN MACHINE NEVER BREAKS!” before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup playoffs with red war paint on. I mean, if we can get into ESPN The Magazine, anything is possible.

Thursday night, I turned to ESPN2, and watched PTI while I ate dinner. It almost resulted in me spitting out my cheesesteak. Caps Fever Hits Columbia, Maryland

Overlooking Lake Kittamaqundi, there stands a quaint statue honoring Columbia’s visionary founder, James Rouse, and his brother, Willard. The statue, entitled “The Dealings,” is an iconic landmark that everyone in Howard County knows, and one that I come across almost daily when I eat at one of Columbia’s awesome lakefront restaurants. So naturally, when I got on Facebook last night and came across Dylan Goldberg’s photo of the Rouses in full hockey gear rocking the red, I knew I had to share it with the world. Well – at least when I stopped laughing. I hope you enjoy.
