GIF Recap: Caps Beat Wings Thanks to Oshie and Kuzy Shootout Goals

The Capitals beat the Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout Tuesday on the same night Mike Green returned to Verizon Center. Justin Williams scored in the game’s first minute to record his 600th career point, and Alex Ovechkin tied the game in the 3rd period with his 13th goal of the season. T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov both scored in the shootout to ensure the Caps moved back into first place in the Metropolitan Division.

The Capitals started their three-game road trip through Canada with a 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. Tom Wilson scored his first goal of the season in his hometown as Jason Chimera got his seventh to tie all of last season’s total. Marcus Johansson and Justin Williams completed the scoring for the Caps.

The Capitals won their third game in a row on Wednesday night, beating the Winnipeg Jets 5-3. Dmitry Orlov scored in his third straight game, and Evgeny Kuznetsov had a three-point night for the fifth time this season. Alex Ovechkin also added his 11th goal and second power play marker this season.

The Capitals scored four first period goals to lead them to a 7-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. Evgeny Kuznetsov and Jason Chimera both had three point nights, while four of the Caps’ goals were scored by defensemen. The pick of the goals being Dmitry Orlov’s first goal since March 2014.

The Capitals followed up a 2-1 overtime win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday with a 3-2 loss at home to the Dallas Stars the following night. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the OT winner against the Red Wings, and Alex Ovechkin finally scored goal number 484 on the Stars to become the highest scoring Russian player in the NHL.

Michael Latta’s first goal in 66 games was not enough for the Capitals as they lost 3-2 in OT to the Calgary Flames on Friday night. Jay Beagle equalised with 5 minutes remaining to take the game to OT, but Sean Monahan scored his second of the game to give the Flames the win.

The Capitals beat the Leafs 3-2 in a dramatic shootout win at Verizon Center on Saturday night. Nicklas Backstrom tied the game at 2-2 with 0.8 seconds left on the clock. Alex Ovechkin tied Sergei Federov’s record for most goals in the NHL by a Russian-born player getting his 483rd career goal, and almost broke the record, until his goal was controversially waved off for goaltender interference.

The Capitals kept up their franchise-best start on Thursday by beating the Boston Bruins 4-1 at Verizon Center. Brooks Laich and Karl Alzner scored their first goals of the season, with Michael Latta getting his first point, handing the Bruins their first loss on the road this season. Alex Ovechkin got his 7th goal of the season, moving closer to becoming the highest Russian-born goal scorer in the NHL, moving to 482 goals, one behind Sergei Fedorov’s record of 483.
