Sunday afternoon, Capitals PR announced that Brooks Orpik will not suit up against the Flyers and “is listed as day-to-day” with a lower-body injury.
Details about how, or when, Orpik suffered his injury were not disclosed. However, Orpik was projected to play per Mike Vogel’s update earlier in the day.

The Capitals wore St. Patrick’s Day themed green jerseys during warmups for their annual Go Green Night. The jerseys were auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Anacostia Watershed Society and Anacostia Waterfront Trust.
Recent member of the 600 Goal Club, Alex Ovechkin, saw his jersey fetch the most at $1850. Evgeny Kuznetsov ($1250) and Jakub Vrana ($1150) were the only other Capitals to crack the $1000 mark.

Former 13th overall pick Jakub Vrana, who wears jersey number 13, scored his 13th goal of the season Friday night against the Islanders. It was arguably the greatest goal of Jakub’s young NHL career.
The Sonic V took off down the ice with speed and rocketed the puck past Jaroslav Halak. The tally contributed to Vrana’s third star of the game.
Honestly, we’re all still a little speechless, because dang, Vrana is fast.

For the second time this season, Alex Ovechkin was served an obscure equipment penalty. On January 12, Ovi took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for throwing Tom Wilson a stick from the bench. His latest infraction was also stick related.
With 30 seconds left in the first period against the Islanders, Dmitry Orlov lost his twig. Ovechkin attempted to be the helpful captain we all know him to be, and “shot” the twig back to Orlov.
The only problem? You can’t do that.

On Monday, Alex Ovechkin hit another career milestone when he scored his 600th goal against the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck was the goaltender victimized between the pipes for the historic tally.
While that may not be newsworthy in itself, Hellebuyck’s bad luck is anything but ordinary.

When Evgeny Kuznetsov first joined the Capitals from Russia, Michael Latta and Tom Wilson gave him a nickname: Harry Potter. The nickname was given to Kuznetsov due to his “magical” stick skills.
Last Thursday, Wilson was involved in a scary incident which saw a puck deflect off Nicklas Backstrom’s stick, catching him in the face. The injury left him with a broken nose and a lightning bolt shaped scar – just like a certain boy wizard that Wilson happens to be a fan of.
Looks like it’s time to retire the nickname, Kuzy. There’s a new wizard in town.

Alex Ovechkin has hit a number of milestones in his career. Several have come during the 2017-18 season, including his 1,100th point, his 500th assist, and now his 600th goal.
Many of Ovechkin’s career milestones have happened with his parents, Mikhail and Tatyana, in the stands. Though they were in Moscow when their son tallied goal number 600, that didn’t stop them from penning an emotional letter on NHL.com/ru.

Monday night’s matchup between the Caps and the Jets was billed as a showdown between Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy contenders Patrik Laine and Alex Ovechkin.
Heading into the game, the two were tied for a league-leading 40 goals each. Ovechkin scored twice, restoring his sole lead and hitting a milestone 600th goal.
When Ovi found the back of the net for his historic tally, Laine was also on the ice.
The Jets star, who looked up to Ovechkin as a child, gushed about the experience to the media.

Zach Leonsis, senior vice president of strategic initiatives for Monumental Sports & Entertainment, general manager of Monumental Sports Network, and son of Ted Leonsis, just made a rather hefty real-estate purchase. A $9 million Kalorama mansion, to be exact, according to Curbed DC, the Washington Business Journal and UrbanTurf.
The home was previously owned by Robert Allbritton, the founder of Politico. Allbritton sold it in 2007 to the current owners. It was first listed by those owners in October 2017 for $9,975,000.

The race for the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy is heating back up. On Saturday, Patrik Laine tied Alex Ovechkin for a league-leading 40 goals. For Laine, 22 of those goals have come in 2018 alone. In his last five games he has tallied nine goals, including his fourth career hat trick, making him just the third player to do so before turning 20.
That impressive run landed Laine the NHL’s first star for the week of March 5-11, 2018, and there is little indication that the Winnipeg Jet forward will be slowing down any time soon. With the Caps and Jets clashing Monday night, Ovechkin vs. Laine has been the story of the hour.
