Game 1 and NLDS Game 5 Live Blog: Caps at Pens, Nats vs Dodgers

The Capitals are opening their season tonight after Pittsburgh takes an hour and a half to hoist some cloth thing. However, back at home the Nationals are sending out Max Scherzer to win Game 5 and send them into the NLCS where they would have a date with the Chicago Cubs.

In summary, my attention is going to divided like no other, this live blog isn’t going to have the format that you probably remember from last season because it may involve baseball activity, but it will return to normal eventually. Let’s go win multiple sports ball games by multiple runs/goals.

Caps announce first training camp cuts

The Capitals announced the first large group of cuts to the training camp roster on Thursday. The cut players will report back to their junior hockey teams, to AHL camp in Hershey, or if they were on a professional tryout they will just be released.

ESPN wants you to know that Alex Ovechkin lost to Sidney Crosby again and it’s all his fault

Team Russia was ousted by Team Canada in the semi-finals of the World Cup of Hockey this past weekend. Hockey players Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin both played in that game. Several sporting news outlets noticed this fact and, deciding that the world hasn’t had enough of this particular story, rained down the takes.

One such story comes from Pierre LeBrun, ESPN’s NHL columnist and TSN Hockey insider. LeBrun beats this dead horse into glue while also getting some nifty anonymous quotes from some GMs and coaches who do not like Ovechkin one bit.

Nicklas Backstrom scores off giant rebound for his first World Cup of Hockey goal

The Swedes have narrowed the gap on Team North America. Down two goals late in the first period, the Swedes got a power play opportunity and your favorite blonde NHL center Nicklas Backstrom one-timed a rebound past John Gibson. Former Caps draft pick Filip Forsberg got the assist.

Phil Kessel responds to the USA’s elimination from the World Cup of Hockey with scorching tweet

With Tuesday night’s loss to Canada 4-2, Team USA’s World Cup of Hockey tournament will go no further than the group stages. One of the reasons for this early departure was the fact that the team’s brass seemingly decided to go with grit over skill in regards to a few key roster decisions.

The most controversial decision was leaving Pittsburgh Penguins forward Phil Kessel off the team even after he led the Penguins in both goals and points on the way to their Stanley Cup victory.

Kessel in spectacular fashion chimed in on Twitter literally moments after the final horn went off signaling the end of the road for Team USA.

The World Cup of Hockey shows why referee body cams should be mandatory for all NHL games

The World Cup of Hockey has given us looks at new team concepts like Team Europe and Team North America, but the biggest revelation of the new/old tournament has been the use of body cams on the officials.

Want to get a first person view of Alex Ovechkin screaming in the face of an official? Want to witness the pinpoint precision of a Connor McDavid/Auston Matthews goal? Want to see the complicated dynamics of a face off?

In my opinion, these angles are just way too good to not have on a consistent basis throughout the regular season and playoffs.

TJ Oshie on the triple deke: ‘If Gordon Bombay said it, it has to be real’

Thursday was the NHL’s World Cup of Hockey media day in Toronto. Capitals forward TJ Oshie, one of the world’s best shootout specialists, was asked about the effectiveness of the famed triple deke from the Mighty Ducks movie series.

His answer was tremendous.

Alex Ovechkin scores from his office against Canada

Alex Ovechkin just scored in Pittsburgh. The Team Russia captain blasted a classic one-timer from his office past Canadian goaltender Carey Price. The power play goal came on a two-man advantage and tied the game up at one at the 3:40 mark of the third period. The goal was Ovechkin’s first point in three pre-tournament games for Russia.

Yes, he was heavily booed.

Alex Ovechkin thinks the current NHL playoff seeding format is ‘weird’

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin likes a lot of things: cars, scoring goals, that one blue suit, the right parenthesis button, celebrating goals, and sweatpants. One thing he definitely does not like is the NHL’s current playoff seeding format. In an interview with CSN Mid-Atlantic’s Tarik El-Bashir, the Russian machine called it “weird.”

Filip Forsberg dreamed of playing on a line with Nicklas Backstrom

Last week, we wrote about Filip Forsberg and how Team Sweden has him lined up next to Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey. We’ve learned today just how Filip feels about that.

Sunday night, Forsberg talked to Katie Brown, NHL.com’s Washington correspondent. Forsberg let her know that when he was drafted by the Caps in 2012 that it became a dream of his to play on a line with fellow Swede Nicklas Backstrom.
