Braden Holtby, the Capitals’ Stanley Cup winning goalie and their You Can Play Ambassador, was a surprise guest at the Human Rights Campaign’s 22nd Annual National Dinner. The event helps to raise money and awareness to advocate for LGBTQ equality.
In Holtby’s speech, he said that the Capitals are “proof that supporting LGBTQ equality is a winning decision, and we’re honored to stand with you in this fight.”

In the past, Alex Ovechkin has received criticism for his perceived physical fitness and body weight. Those days are now in the past.
Last September, the Capitals captain arrived at training camp a trim 239 pounds. A month later, the rejuvenated Russian machine opened the season with two consecutive hat tricks. He finished the year with a Stanley Cup, the Conn Smythe, and the Rocket Richard trophy for the seventh time.
This season, according to the new team roster, Ovechkin weighs four pounds less than last year.
Players and management mentioned how refreshed Ovechkin looked — even after a summer during which the entire team was supposedly partying the whole time.

Alex Ovechkin carries his history with him every time he hits the ice. Literally. His jersey number from the KHL is written on his shoulder pads, his late brother’s name is stitched into his gloves, and he continues to wear a patch commemorating Lokomotiv Yaroslavl on his chest protector.
Today is the seventh anniversary of that Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash, which claimed the lives of 43 members of the KHL team. Ovechkin has worn the Lokomotiv patch at least since 2014.
CBC revealed that Ovechkin was still wearing the same chest protector and patch during the Capitals’ championship run.
