The best reactions to the Flyers’ new mascot Gritty

It’s been a stressful week, but at least it’s–oh. Monday.

Thankfully, the Flyers revealed their new mascot Gritty, and he/she/it is both giving us life and keeping us awake at night. It will haunt our dreams when sleep finally overtakes us. If we survive the nightmares of its gloriously gyrating belly, it will make us breakfast in the morning and stare at us with its googly eyes while we eat.

Erik Karlsson made his San Jose debut in the Sharks new ‘stealth mode’ jersey

Erik Karlsson made his San Jose Sharks debut Saturday night in a preseason game against the Vegas Golden Knights. But when he hit the ice, he wasn’t decked out in the expected Pacific teal. He was wearing the new black “stealth mode” jersey instead.

“It looks great,” Karlsson said. “You know, for me, it’s a weird feeling, obviously, to put on a brand new jersey, but I’m super excited for it, and I’m proud to be able to stand here today and show you this third jersey. I think it looks awesome.”

Four Capitals players spent their off day at the rink being adorable

After losing their fourth preseason game to the Canes 5-1, the Capitals were given Saturday off to rest. That didn’t mean they stayed off the ice.

TJ Oshie and John Carlson were both at MedStar Capitals Iceplex with their children. Jakub Vrana and Andre Burakovsky skated with youth hockey players.

Caps attempt to identify their teammates in Stanley Cup day guessing game, mostly fail

The Washington Capitals celebrated their Stanley Cup win in epic style. While many of the players joined their teammates to celebrate their Cup days together, not all of the Capitals kept up on each others’ activities – despite a chattier than usual team chat room, according to Tom Wilson.

Darren Haynes, a sportscaster with WUSA9, visited the Capitals during Training Camp and played a guessing game with Alex Ovechkin, TJ Oshie, and Braden Holtby. The premise was this. Haynes showed the players pictures of their teammates, obscured and silhouetted, with the Stanley Cup and asked them to identify who was in the photo.

The result was local sports TV magic.

Hershey Bears announce 2018 Training Camp schedule

Thursday morning, the Hershey Bears announced their schedule for training camp. Like the Capitals, all practices are free and open to the public. The Bears’ 2018-2019 regular season begins on October 6th.

The Bears, who missed the playoffs last season, will focus more on player development this season, giving more opportunities to younger players. With the Capitals returning almost the entirety of their Stanley Cup-winning roster, prospects are fighting less for a roster spot and more to be first in line should a player be called up.

Capitals prospects Lucas Johansen, Jonas Siegenthaler, and Tyler Lewington could all be on the initial training camp roster, which will be released in the coming days. Veterans Logan Pyett and Adam Morrison were signed recently.

NWHL goalie Sam Walther bought Braden Holtby’s shirt. Now she’s challenging him on Twitter to return the favor.

Sam Walther’s journey from playing street hockey with the sons of Capitals’ players to Division III hockey, and finally to a professional women’s league is an inspiring story with many connections to the current Stanley Cup Champions.

This season, Walther will be in goal for the Connecticut Whale of the NWHL. She’s worn #37 for most of her playing career, in honor of Olie Kolzig, but now she has a new number: #70.

Braden Holtby has been a role model for Walther both on and off the ice. Recently, she bought a Holtby T-shirt. She then tweeted Holtby, asking what it would take for him to buy a #70 Walther one.

Stanley Cup Champion Alex Ovechkin videobombs John Carlson’s Instagram

The Capitals held the first home game of the 2018-2019 preseason on Tuesday. The Capitals ultimately lost to the Bruins by a score of 5-2, but the real action was taking place far above the ice.

After having dinner with Andre Burakovsky, John Carlson and his oldest son Lucca joined other members of the team in a suite. Carlson filmed as Lucca munched on popcorn.

Captain Alex Ovechkin made a surprise guest appearance, checking in on his star defenseman and his mini-me, and sticking his tongue in the newly-enlarged gap in his teeth.

Braden Holtby’s full speech at the HRC National Dinner

Braden Holtby, Vezina-winner and Stanley Cup champion, was invited to speak at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner on September 13.

Braden and his wife Brandi have been LGBTQ advocates and HRC supporters for many years. In his speech, Braden shared the story of how his family came to support the cause, and what it meant for him and for his team to join the fight for equality.

The full story behind how Lars Eller got his ‘Tiger’ nickname

Capitals center Lars Eller, the man who scored the game-winning goal in Game Five to give the Caps the Stanley Cup, missed the first several days of 2018 Training Camp due to a minor lower-body injury. Monday, the 29-year-old center returned to the ice and spoke with reporters after his first practice with the team.

And on this day, Eller gave the media a treat. He revealed the full story of how he got his seemingly random “Tiger” nickname.

Nicklas Backstrom on Alex Ovechkin’s best summer ever and how ‘special’ it was to raise the Stanley Cup together

Nicklas Backstrom returned to DC after his shortest summer ever as a Washington Capital. After the first day of Training Camp, he answered questions from reporters about the challenges the team will face this season. He also talked through his memory of being handed the Stanley Cup and revealed more about his close relationship with Alex Ovechkin.

He also threw in a few quality dad jokes along the way.
