Matthew Phillips scores goal and tallies assist in ‘really, really important’ game for his chances to make Capitals roster

The Washington Capitals brought in AHL star Matthew Phillips on a one-year, one-way contract this offseason. The diminutive, highly-skilled forward has been a standout in the AHL for the past two seasons and is now trying to show his point-scoring abilities can translate to the NHL.

In a game that head coach Spencer Carbery labeled as pivotal for the ongoing Training Camp roster battles, the Calgary native came up with a goal and an assist in an impressive showing.

Capitals fall to Red Wings 5-2 in penalty-filled preseason game

The Washington Capitals fell to the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 in preseason action on Saturday.

The Capitals, dressing a roster of mostly mid-tier players, were left scrambling multiple times in their own zone as Red Wings veterans took advantage.

The team showed some fight late in the second period, with Dylan Strome a part of two goals, but it was not enough.

Alex Ovechkin could be your landlord as his first DC-area house is available for lease

Not only is Alex Ovechkin one of the greatest hockey players of all time, but off the ice, he’s a businessman.

Throughout his career, Ovechkin has endorsed a wide-range of products from batteries and razors to banks and soda. He’s been one of the most highly-sought out players by hockey equipment manufacturers. Ovi’s also signed to Nike to wear their lifestyle gear and has his own clothing line.

He makes money in other ways, too.

Ovechkin smartly never sold his rookie home in Arlington, Virginia. The Russian superstar held onto the property and has put it up for rent multiple times throughout his career.

With former tenant Erik Gustafsson recently moving out (the defenseman was dealt to Toronto at the February trade deadline and signed with Peter Laviolette’s New York Rangers over the summer), Ovechkin’s property is again open for lease. The price? $9,000 a month.

Open Thread: Washington Capitals rematch Detroit Red Wings in third preseason game

The Washington Capitals are in Motown to rematch the Detroit Red Wings for their third game of the 2023 preseason. The Capitals won the previous game 4-3, getting goals from Nicklas Backstrom, Tom Wilson, Rasmus Sandin, and John Carlson. Their preseason record thus far is 1-0-1.

For tonight’s matchup, Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery will focus more on evaluating the organization’s mid-tier players as they fight for depth roster spots on the NHL team. Hunter Shepard, whose pegged to be the Hershey Bears’ full-time starter this season, will play the entire game in net.

The game will air live on Monumental Sports Network (formerly known as NBC Sports Washington) with Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin on the call.

Capitals monitoring Training Camp battle for bottom-six forward roles: ‘This is a really, really important few games.’

While most of the Washington Capitals’ attention has been focused on the open spots on its blueline, head coach Spencer Carbery made it known that the competition is wide open for the team’s remaining forward spots on Saturday.

With marquee free agency signing Max Pacioretty on the shelf recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, the Caps have three to four open spots for forwards coming out of camp.

Carbery listed off a handful of names fighting for those depth positions and emphasized that he’ll be intently watching their play in this next stretch of preseason games.

Hunter Shepard to play full preseason game for Capitals against Red Wings

The Washington Capitals set out on their first road trip of the preseason on Saturday. The Caps are headed to Motown to take on the Detroit Red Wings for the second time in just three days.

The Capitals lineup tonight will feature predominantly a mix of prospects and minor leaguers, which is different from Thursday where head coach Spencer Carbery played the team’s superstar core. Hunter Shepard, the Hershey Bears’ presumed number one starter this season, will play the full game against Detroit.

The New York native signed a one-year, two way deal with the Sens on the first day of unrestricted free agency.

Spencer Carbery’s ‘a traditionalist’, prefers wingers and defensemen playing on their strong sides

Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery gave insight into one of his personal coaching beliefs on Saturday. The young bench boss, full of new ideas and energy, says he is, however, a traditionalist when it comes to one aspect of the game.

Carbery prefers his defensemen play on the side of the ice that directly correlates with their handedness. So, a right-handed player plays exclusively on the right of a pairing and a left-handed player plays exclusively on the left.

Nick Jensen misses third consecutive day of Capitals’ Training Camp
