Martin Fehervary turned an unlucky moment into a personal flex on Opening Night.
Midway through the second period, Fehervary had the skate blade on his left boot pop off. But instead of looking like Bambi on ice or needing assistance from a teammate, Fehervary just hopped from the defensive zone to the bench on one leg.
If you’re not impressed by Fehervary’s feat — a 215-pound human maintaining balance while hopping on one leg that is pushing off a slippery surface with a knife on his shoe — consider that the leg Fehervary hopped back on, his right one, is the same leg that went under the knife in the spring.
The Slovakian rearguard had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee in April, missing all of the Capitals’ Stanley Cup playoffs run. By August, he was still reporting lingering pain and inflammation in his knee, keeping him off the ice much later than originally planned.
Beyond his leggy feat, Fehervary received 18:27 of ice time in the Capitals’ season opener, posting a game-high four hits among Capitals defenseman. The game also marked the 300th of his career.
