Jakub Vrana has been incredible through the Caps’ first 25 games. After scoring 24 goals last season and establishing himself as a legitimate top-six forward, the Vrana of 2019-20 is now making the case that he is a legitimate star with 11 goals in 25 games. Vrana has been so good that, while reasonable minds may disagree, there’s a case to be made that he’s been Washington’s best forward this season.
But we’ll save that debate for another time. For now, this is simply a Jakub Vrana appreciation post.
- Vrana is tied for fourth best in the league with 10 five-on-five goals.
- His 21.4 individual shot attempts per hour are third best in the league.
- Vrana’s 2.9 points per hour at five-on-five lead the Caps and rank 16th best overall.
- With 1.96 goals per hour at five-on-five, Vrana ranks seventh best in the NHL.
- The Caps take 54.4 percent of the shot attempts when Vrana is on the ice at five-on-five, second best on the team, behind only Lars Eller.
- When Vrana is on the ice, the Caps’ expected goals percentage is 56.0 percent, third best on the team behind Dmitry Orlov and Brendan Leipsic.
- Vrana leads the team with 1.08 individual expected goals per hour.
- Vrana’s 15 points at five-on-five are good for 14th best in the league and trail only John Carlson’s 16 on the Caps.
So, yeah, this Vrana guy has been really good this season. Just imagine what his counting stats would be if he played on the first power-play unit. And though his hot shooting may cool a bit as the season grows, Vrana is making a compelling argument that he is a real star.
