Nic Dowd leaves Leafs game after awkward fall, favoring right knee

Towards the end of the first period of the Capitals’ game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, center Nic Dowd had an awkward fall tangled in a group of players and stayed down for an extended period of time afterward.

Dowd was helped off the ice without putting any weight on his right leg and went directly to the Capitals locker room.

There was a penalty on the play for a hit on Travis Boyd before Dowd entered scrum along the boards and incurred the injury.

TJ Oshie assisted him to the exit.

Dowd tried to return for the second period, but could not continue on in the game.

The Capitals announced minutes later that Dowd had a lower-body injury and would be re-evaluated Wednesday.

Earlier in the first period another Capitals’ center had an injury scare. Evgeny Kuznetzov had an awkward collision with the boards but returned to the game with a cut across the bridge of his nose.
