TJ Oshie hits 25-goal mark for third time in career after lighting lamp twice against Lightning

TJ Oshie had his fifth two-goal game of the season Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Both of Oshie’s goals were first period strikes 5:15 apart, giving the Caps a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

With 25 goals, Oshie is the second-leading goalscorer on the Capitals. It’s the third time he’s hit the 25-goal mark in his career.

Goal 1

Oshie’s first strike came 10:45 into the first period. Oshie, set up in front of the net, got his stick on the rebound after Andrei Vasilevskiy could not control Nick Jensen’s shot from the point. He dove to put the puck in on his backhand.

Oshie pumped his fist after the goal. It gave the Capitals a 2-0 lead.

Goal 2

Oshie scored from nearly the exact same spot on the ice with four minutes remaining in the period. While on a powerplay, John Carlson unleashed a shot from the point. Oshie deflected the puck past Vasilevskiy for goal number two.

Nicklas Backstrom bookended Oshie’s goals in the first and second period, giving him two as well.

“I kind of looked at Nick and I was like, ‘Two hat tricks tonight?” Oshie said after the game laughing. “The next thing you know, O has two and then we looked at each other and were like, ‘maybe we’ll just let him get the hat trick.'”

Since arriving in Washington after a trade with St. Louis, Oshie has averaged 25 goals per season with a career high of 33 during the 2016-17 season. In his previous seven campaigns with the Blues, Oshie scored over 20 goals once, 21 in 2013-14.
