We don’t have any hockey to distract us right now, so here are some ideas from us at RMNB on how you might spend your time in lockdown.
In today’s episode: good music about feeling bad.
Camden Welles is a four-piece synthy rock band from New York. Their songs are shimmery and short, but they tend to stick with you.
Hey, anyone feel like this lately?
I spend too much time in my head
It’s so difficult getting dressed
Cause I’m too busy losing touch
To worry about cleaning up
Those are some lyrics from “About You.” Following the richest vein of their previous project, Young Rising Sons, the gentlemen of Camden Welles make pop songs that are exactly as dark as they are shiny. I’ve never felt as good being bummed out as I have with their recent EP, Cold Blue Light.
And then there is their newest single, “Famous on the Internet”, which sounds like if David Foster Wallace wrote lyrics to a Lionel Ritchie song.
Here’s one heck of a couplet: “Falling in love with a machine / I wanna be liked desperately”.
Camden Welles is the perfect music for your headphones when you have to wait until 10 PM to go for a walk when no one’s around so you can finally get your blood moving at least once today because you’ve spent all day inside on your couch feeling sorry for yourself because you’re feeling sorry for yourself because even though it sucks for you right now you know it sucks more for other people and now you feel like trash for even having self-pity. Maybe this music will make you feel good about feeling bad or maybe just a little less alone for a few minutes.
Anyway, you can follow Camden Welles on Twitter and Instagram and whatever. Their records are streaming pretty much everywhere. When this is all over, maybe go see ’em on tour with me.
Disclosure: I consider the people in the band my friends. Ian does too. They’re also Caps fans, and that makes me wonder precisely what the meaning of the “Don’t worry about the hurricanes” lyric is.
