Following a collision with Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews on Thursday night, NHL official Tim Peel will be unable to work in the foreseeable future. John Shannon reports that Peel fractured his fibula.
At the time, it seemed like a minor incident. Toews bumped into Peel along the boards, forcing Peel down to the ice with his right leg trailing. Peel appeared to know he was hurt immediately, but he was able to skate off the ice and even hop over the boards.
But now we know the injury was serious: a broken calf bone.
Referee Tim Peel fractured his fibula Thursday in Glendale. Successful surgery and now home for the holidays… and probably the rest of the season.

Peel has had a long and storied career. Let’s wish him well and hope for a long and restful, but also long, recovery.
