And just like that, Nicklas Backstrom has opened up scoring again in Game Two. For his third goal of the still-baby-fat playoffs, Backstrom got a crucial assist from Alex Ovechkin.
But the play began at the other end of the ice, where Alex Ovechkin flattened poor Brett Pesce.
The Caps quickly shifted to offense, with Ovechkin carrying the puck into the zone. With some nifty stickwork, Ovechkin threaded a pass to Backstrom in the slot. With a touch, Backstrom beat Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek and put Washington up 1-0.
Backstrom has three goals in loffs so far.
