Jakub Vrana has a lot of skill, but it was his hustle Monday night that helped open up the scoring against the Calgary Flames.
With his dad in attendance and suiting up against Jaromir Jagr for the first time in his career, Vrana turned a bad first period breakout into a beautiful goal for Lars Eller.

The play started in the Caps defensive zone. Tom Wilson had the puck along the boards and tried to find Vrana in the neutral zone with speed. Wilson’s pass missed the mark, but that ended up working out just fine.
Vrana beat defenseman Travis Hamonic to the puck and then found Eller crashing the net for the layup.
“It really just was a great play by V chasing down the loose puck, that probably shouldn’t of turned into a chance, but it did because he worked to get first on that puck and he made a great play to me in front,” Eller said to Al Koken at intermission. “It was just put the stick on it.
“I think today exactly what you want to see from him is using his best asset, which is his speed,” Eller continued. “It creates chances and that’s what we want to see a lot of from him.”
