Before the Capitals took on the Predators, Nashville honored seven-year-old Andie Owen during their ceremonial faceoff. Andie, who adorably dressed up Gnash for the tribute, wore the mascot’s furry paws and feet while dropping the puck.
Both Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin and Nashville Predators captain Roman Josi were impressed by Tiny Andie’s strength and determination because they both gave her their sticks afterwards.
Predators PA announcer Paul McCann explained Andie’s story as he introduced her to the crowd.
“In honor of our continued fight against cancer tonight, please welcome to the ice, our hockey fights cancer ambassador Andie Owen,” McCann said.
“Andie is seven-years-old and lives in Murfreesboro, Tennessee with her mom and dad, sister, brother, and dog. And in June 2016, Andie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and she immediately started treatment at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. She is now 17 months into a 28-month treatment protocol and is in remission and doing great.
“Andie enjoys playing soccer — including throughout the hospital hallways with her nurses and doctors, camping, hiking, swimming, riding her bike, reading, and playing hockey in the garage. For Halloween, she dressed up as Gnash and she loves cheering on our Nashville Predators. Ladies and gentleman, your hockey fights cancer ceremonial puck drop ambassador, Andie Owen!”
Andie then dropped the puck and received signed sticks from Josi and Ovechkin.
Similar to the Capitals a few weeks ago, the Predators wore lavender jerseys during pregame warmups to benefit local cancer charities. PK Subban also wore a cowboy hat.
