Outdoor games are old hat now in the NHL. With some of the novelty wearing off, teams are coming out with new logos and unique jerseys to drive interest and sales.

The Capitals’ Winter Classic jerseys were a hit. But Washington’s kit for the March 3, 2018 Stadium Series game against the Maple Leafs at the Naval Academy may be a flop. The uniform crest, unveiled Saturday afternoon, is simply the normal wordmark shortened to ‘Caps.’

Matt Niskanen and John Carlson made the team’s official presention during Navy’s game against SMU.

The NHL released also released the logo for the event.

Here are more details from the league.

NEW YORK (Nov. 11, 2017) – The National Hockey League and Washington Capitals® today unveiled the 2018 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™ logo as the team prepares to host the Toronto Maple Leafs® outdoors at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on March 3, 2018. The logo was revealed at today’s Navy-SMU game, which was attended by Capitals defensemen Matt Niskanen and John Carlson.

The 2018 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™ logo builds upon the legacy of the NHL Stadium Series brand, drawing from the rich history of the Naval Academy, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, and Navy inspired indicia. A focal element of the mark is a stoic and proud eagle that is widely used throughout the graduating class plaques that adorn the stadium. Enclosed in the eagle’s wings are the iconic archways of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and at the top right of the mark, the north star – a subtle nod to the Navy brand. A bold and strong military inspired typeface was incorporated that can be seen on Naval ships. The overall color palette of navy and gold is directly tied back to the U.S. Naval Academy. At the base of the mark is an anchor, one of the most iconic of Naval symbols. The mark will serve as a regal and patriotic symbol of the 2018 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™ and the events surrounding it. The 2018 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™ logo was designed by NHL Creative Services.

In addition, both the Capitals and Maple Leafs team crests were unveiled for the outdoor game. The Capitalscrest is an adaptation of the club’s current logo that reads “Caps,” a popular team nickname since the club’s inception in 1974. The classic Maple Leafs primary logo will serve the club’s crest for the 2018 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™.

In May, the NHL announced that the Capitals will host the Maple Leafs in a regular-season outdoor game will be played at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, home of the NCAA Division I, Navy Midshipmen, on Saturday, Mar. 3, 2018. The game will be broadcast in primetime on NBC in the United States and on CBC and TVA Sports in Canada at 8 p.m. ET.

Additional details on the 2018 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™ – including ticketing information and other events surrounding the game – will be announced on NHL.com/StadiumSeries. NHL Network™ and NHL.comwill provide extensive coverage live from the event leading up to and after the game. NHL Social™ will have exclusive coverage on all social platforms, including the use of the official hashtag NHL #StadiumSeries.
