This guest post comes to us from RMNB reader Russell Kay, who planned one heck of a surprise at the Caps’ home game against Philadelphia on January 27.
Samantha and I have been attending Capitals games for years, so when the time came to take our relationship to the next level, the venue was easy: the Verizon Center.
Figuring out how was the hard part. A message on the big screen or the LEDs would be too informal, and she might have missed it. And how was I going to catch the perfect moment on camera if I didn’t even know when it was going to be?
I decided to take another couple with us. I told everyone we would go early to watch warm-ups. I planned on popping the question while we took pictures of the couples together. It was perfect.
The day of the game came. It was the Capitals against the Flyers (added bonus: our first game together was against the Flyers). We made our way to the rink. We found a great spot and we went to take pictures of each other. The other couple went first, and then it was our turn. I was a nervous wreck. Samantha and I turned to the cameras and then I went down on one knee and took the ring out.
“Will you be the Backie to my Ovi?” I asked. (We say this to each other a lot, I had to do it.)
With tears in her eyes, she said yes!
The Verizon Center has always been a special place for us, and now we will have extra memories to share when we go watch the boys in red play!
Congrats, Russell & Samantha! We wish you two nothing but the best.
