The Washington Capitals’ top line can’t stop scoring. On Thursday they KO’d another hockey team, this time the Vancouver Canucks. It was the first time the Capitals have won in Vancouver’s home barn since Valentine’s Day 2001, and it was all thanks to the Russians. Workers of the world, unite!
In the third period, with the game tied 2-2, Braden Holtby settled the puck behind the net and handed it off to Russian defenseman Dmitry Orlov. Orlov sent a beautiful breakout pass off the boards to Russian center Evgeny Kuznetsov, springing him and Russian forward Alex Ovechkin on a two-on-one. Ovechkin lobbed a one-timer past Canucks goaltender Ryan Miller to give Washington the lead and the win.
Ovechkin has scored in five straight games to open the season, a new Capitals record. It’s his 81st career game-winning goal.
He was pumped.
At the end of the game, CSN Washington’s Craig Laughlin endorsed the first line’s new nickname, the TKO Line.
